about

The first novel in national bestselling author Carol Berg's Rai Kirah saga follows one man's journey from slave to savior...

Seyonne was not always a slave. Once his people were the guardians of magic such as the land had never seen, protectors and defenders. But the Derzhi came, and enslaved them. Now, years of degradation and misery have blurred Seyonne’s memory, and sapped his strength. To his people, he is already dead. And to him, death is all that is left—until he finds hope in a most unlikely place…

Sold once again, Seyonne is bought by Aleksander, the heir to the Derzhi Empire. His new master is cold, and heedlessly cruel. But within Aleksander, the seeds of greatness wait. All it would take is guidance from one such as Seyonne once was…

But time is short, for demons have also noticed Aleksander—and what they cannot control they will destroy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Highly enjoyable (The Chapters/Indigo website has been deleting my ratings so: I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars/leaves.) I really loved this one. It grips you from the beginning and doesn't let go. Both Seyonne's and Aleksander's intertwined transformations and redemptions are the focus and the heart of the story and both were extremely well done. You know a book is good when characters in a fictional universe become this real to you and make you root for them 'til the end. All in all, top notch world-building and characterization. I can't wait to see what happens next. Highly recommended. Similar recommended titles (given here because of the weird problems I've been having with the Chapters/Indigo website and which they STILL haven't fixed): -A woman worth ten coppers, by Morgan Howell -Santa Olivia, by Jacqueline Carey -Inda, by Sherwood Smith -Lord of the Fading Lands (and the sequel, Lady of Light and Shadows), by CL Wilson

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely amazinig read I read this series back many years ago and was in luck at local store and managed to stumble upon it once again. Its an amazing short trilogy dealing with the main characters trials and tribulations as his life is beset by one hardship after another. You follow along his choices and subsequent consequences. A really amazing read and the final book raises some pretty interesting questions and some introspection as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantasy at its best. It's hard to believe this was Carol Berg's first novel. As much as you want to hate the selfish Prince Aleksander, you find yourself liking the irascrable young man, much as his slave, Sayonne, does. A skillful mix of serious subject matter and humour makes this a great read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Fave Book of the Year 2000 This is my first attempt at reading a fantasy novel and I loved it. A true coming of age story, I won't give away too much of the plot...it doesn't take much to 'spoil' the storylines. I will say that it is the story of a slave and his master. It is beautifully written, and I really felt I knew the characters. To me, that is what a good story is all about. If I read a better book this year I will be surprized.
