Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read story! This is my first time reading Catherine Lane and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. This fabulous story is the Cinderella tale turned on its head and inside out, on the surface, but with so much more going on beyond that. The sendups of the selfie generation, nods to pop culture, mixed together with fairy tales, parodies of bureaucracy, and depiction of prejudice among other things makes this a compact yet complex and hilarious commentary on modern life all wrapped up in a comedy/romance package dipped into a healthy dose of intrigue and mystery. It’s both amazing and impressive to have so much packed into such a short story and done in a coherent, original and entertaining way. It’s a fast read but one where the action and hilarity never stop; there are surprises and twists in the story that keeps it interesting and unpredictable all the way thru. I will definitely be re-reading this story again in the future to see what I may have missed the first time thru. I had the sense at times that there was maybe a reference to pop culture or something else that I was missing but it didn’t take from the story at all; getting the references and inside jokes only adds another layer to the fun and enjoyment of it all. I recommend this to anyone needing a laugh about modern life or a pick me up to their mood in general. Reading ‘Tread Lightly’ has me eager to read more of the stories set to be part of the Window Shopping Collection series; having read works in the past by the other authors currently listed for the series (LT Smith, Andrea Bramhall, and Cheyenne Blue) I cannot wait to see what they contribute because all are stellar writers with wit and humour in abundance as part of their writing arsenal.
