Rated 4 out of 5 by from Practical and usable This small dictionary is portable and compact, designed to be user-friendly. Effectively using just blue and black, headwords in blue boldfaced (sans serif) text stand out from the translation in black plain text (using a serif font). Moreover, page headers use blue for the Japanese section and black for the English. This is visible on the open edge of the page opposite the spine, making such visual cues great help in navigating the dictionary. A minor confusion at first was not realizing the Japanese section was sorted alphabetically by romaji. Japanese text appears throughout, but romaji is more useful to the learner or traveller who is less familiar with the language. This is a practical dictionary first, including even recent words like "Facebook" and "Twitter" in their current usages. To better separate the Japanese section from the English, a suggestion would be to add a coloured page between them, or instead of using that particular blue, try another of higher contrast with the black. This would be most helpful when looking at the open edge of the book. Even with smartphones and e-books these days, nothing beats a printed dictionary for practicality. No fiddling with tiny keys or worrying about dwindling power. As for water damage, this dictionary would surely survive better than an electronic device.

Editorial Reviews

For a pocket dictionary, this little guy is amazing! Still small enough to fit in your pocket, but filled with over 13,000 words! It's updated with words for today's technology and includes a basic overview of grammar and pronunciation as well. The first half of the book is a Japanese-English dictionary and the second half is an English-Japanese dictionary. What's truly unique about this dictionary is the letter category and the headwords are in blue. Visually it is very easy to read despite the small print. If a word can have multiple meanings, it includes the contacts and parenthesis - just like a large dictionary. It's hard to keep this little guy on my desk with two Japanese language high school students trying to borrow it every chance they can. For the low price, I might just have to pick each of them up their own to keep mine to myself!" - Goodreads "
