about

This book is the result of the work of an interdisciplinarygroup of European researchers who have attempted to givebirth to a new fibre communication network concept byexploiting the potential benefits of optical coherenttransmission for local area networks (LANs).The project targeted the development of the necessarybuilding blocks to show experimentally the performance andthe flexibility built into the proposed concept of amulti-channel ultra-wideband network. The system conceptdeveloped within the project associates optical frequencydivision multiplexing with a suitable network architectureandmanagement techniques to allow very high flexibility andefficiency in handling simultaneous transmission over thenetwork (on each optical frequency) of multiple virtualchannels each operating with information rates ranging froma fraction of a Mb/s up to more than 160 Mb/s. Specialisedapplications requiring more than the capacity provided by asingle optical channel were to be dealt with by paralleltransmission over more than one channel. Another importantobjective of the system was tomake the network open to anyfuture evolution by self-reconfiguration without hardwarechanges. The book consists of a collection of technicalreports andis intended as a support for professionals who wish to takeadvantage of design experience gained in an industrialenvironment. It is not intended to be an academic text and abackground knowledge of the main concepts of digitalcommunications is assumed.
