about

I had brain surgery and I am fine!

I have been  a cranial therapist specializing in whole body trauma and healing for others for more than 25 years, I suddenly became my own case study with teaching stories to tell when in the fall of 2008, just 4 years ago, I experienced and survived a brain aneurysm.

I had been experiencing unusual psychological symptoms for years: anxiety, increasing each month until I thought I should be placed in a psychiatric ward. I observed myself and thought: “Oh THIS is what going crazy is like. I cannot stop it, it is out of my control.” Instead, I was put on medication, calmed down and continued with my daily life until I had a seizure and a ruptured brain aneurysm was discovered.

from my journal:
I opened my eyes to find myself in the hospital, surprised to be in intensive care. Someone told me I had had brain surgery. I wiggled my fingers and toes and laughed because, if they moved I must be okay. I could hear, think, laugh and speak. I not only laughed but hollered with glee, like a cowboy on a bucking bronco: “Yahoo, I had brain surgery!” I had brain surgery and I was FINE!

I spent only 2 weeks in the Neurological Intensive Care, recovering.  And then 6 weeks resting at home, reflecting on all that had happened and why. I decided to teach what I had learned, and continue to learn, by telling my stories. So, with much encouragement and assistance, I began to work on a book.  It is on many bookshelves now and is called Uncoiling: A Memoir of Anxiety, Aneurysm and Renewal.

I hope to encourage more understanding of the importance of the connections of body, mind and spirit.  And hence the importance of cultivating body awareness in general to create a foundation for building those connections. This memoir contains many teaching stories and suggestions for reflection. For me, its magic comes from the hints of a much larger story, sprinkled throughout the pages. These can be a path for further inquiry for readers.

Whether you are a somatic colleague, a therapist, a physician, patient or curious reader, you will be engaged in this story when you see the cover and begin reading, drawn into my world of medical and spiritual emergency and life renewal.
