about

Can a broken town survive a second tragedy? The follow-up to the international bestseller Beartown, from #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling author Fredrik Backman.

After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they hear that their beloved local junior hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. As the tension between the two towns simmers, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to try to save the Beartown club.

Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you’ll ever see; Benji, the intense lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker. But bringing this team together proves to be a challenge as old bonds are broken, new ones are formed, and the enmity with Hed grows more and more heated.

As the big game between Beartown and Hed approaches, the not-so-innocent pranks and incidents between the communities pile up and their mutual contempt grows deeper. By the time the last game is finally played, a resident of Beartown will be dead, and the people of both towns will be forced to wonder if, after all they’ve been through, the game they love can ever return to something simple and innocent.

Us Against You is a declaration of love for all the big and small, bright and dark stories that form and color our communities. Compelling and heartbreaking, it’s a roller-coaster ride of emotions and a showcase for “Fredrik Backman’s pitch-perfect dialogue and unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing sequel Backmans seuwoe to his first book, Beartown, is just as exiting, captivating and will keep you wanting to read just one more chapter before putting it down. If you enjoyed Beartown, you'll love this one just as much!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great follow up to Beartown A bit repetitive at times, but I couldn't put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Read I was a little hesitant when I bought this book because I LOVED "Beartown" and I didn't want to be let down by the sequel. I was so wrong and pleasantly surprised... the sequel was even better! I was already invested in the characters so it was like picking up with friends right where we'd left off. Backman has the amazing ability to write characters who are so well-rounded - they have weaknesses that are made up for by their strengths and there isn't one protagonist who you don't feel for in some way. Backman is poetic in his writing and there were numerous times where I found myself going back to read the last line because it resonated so deeply. Long story short: I would recommend this book and this series to anyone... you will not be disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn’t put it down! I couldn’t wait to read this book after reading Beartown and loving it! It definitely did not disappoint!! I felt like I knew the residents of Beartown, it brought me to tears. So well written, I didn’t want it to end!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved this! This sequel resumes the story begun in Beartown and continues to explore all the emotions aroused in the first novel of this duology. In addition, Backman explores the negative aspect of competitiveness, as well as what binds people together as a team. The issues brought up in the novel are big and not all of them are resolved – and rightly so as these issues are continuously prevalent in our society. Yes, the story is about hockey – but it is so much more than about the sport. It is about competition, team spirit, and what it is that makes a team (whether it is for sport, or other aspects of life). I love how in this this sequel to Beartown, the reader learns more about what happens to beloved characters. Their growth continues in Us Against You, suggesting that people never stop learning about themselves – no matter how old they are. While reading the novel, I cheered for my favourite people and felt the pain of those who experienced obstacles. I loved this sequel and really enjoyed Backman’s storytelling. He is certainly talented in weaving emotions and life lessons within the fabric of his story. Us Against You is definitely a novel that will encourage you to pick up another story by this author.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bit disappointed I loved Ove and Beartown and was looking so forward to this book. I felt like the first half of this (rather long) book was just a replay of Beartown. I persevered and enjoyed the last half, but unless Backman's books are are on totally different topics, I've had enough of hockey and Beartown.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and perfect. LOVED this book. I was hesitant to read this book because I loved Beartown and I was worried that the sequel would ruin it. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is easily one of my favourite books of all time. Backman makes you fall in love with the characters from Beartown all over again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book I received a copy of this book from Netgalley. Thank you to Netgalley, to the Author and to the publisher. I read the book Beartown a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so was excited to read this book. The book started a little bit slow, so was a bit concerned that I was going to like the book. The book quickly pick up and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has read Beartown. You could probably read this as a stand alone book, but it would be better if you read Beartown first. 4 stars

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sequel Thank you to Simon and Schuster Canada for a Netgalley copy of this book ! . Backman continues to impress me with his writing in Us Against You. I loved returning to this town and seeing how some of my favourite characters had grown. As in Beartown, this novel tackles challenging topics including violence, mental health, empathy, hatred and love. It discusses gender and sexuality in sports. These topics continue to be discussed within the themes of community, forgiveness, family, acceptance and the work it can take to maintain relationships. This book is not only an enjoyable read but it provides the reader with an opportunity for self reflection and personal growth. . In true Backman style the narration and imagery are beautiful. Though many parts of this story are emotional I still felt hopeful after finishing the novel. It is an emotional read that won’t drain you but still lets you feel for each and every character. Another 5 star read from Fredrik Backman.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! "Sometimes hating one another is so easy that it seems incomprehensible that we ever do anything else. " This book contains so much that it's hard to sum it up in just a few sentences. It's such a strong and impactful story, so much so that I just want to shove it into anyone's hands who will give me a chance to convince them to read it. It's the sequel to Beartown, a book just as moving, and this book definitely lives up to the previous. Backman has a way with words and storytelling; he can create so much emotion with his writing. This book follows the events in Beartown after its last season; it follows Maya's family and how they change after that one night, the hockey club and its team, and many of the towns other citizens. I've honestly never read a book that contains as many well developed characters as this one. But anyway, to sum it up, this town has so much unrest and unease in it with all the changes going on, and this town isnt one that deals well with change. People take sides and people get hurt. The events of this series all take place around a hockey team, and I don't even like hockey, but it's just THAT good of a book. It was a bit slower to start, but once we got more into the events and less of the political background stuff to start off the plot, I had to fight myself to put the book down when I had to do other things. My absolute favourite aspect of this book is the writing. The combination of Backman's moving writing with this powerful story creates an absolutely heartbreaking read. If a book can break my heart, it's a good book. And this is the kind of book won't leave you dry-eyed. It was also a hard read. I had read so much homophobic hatred from many characters in this book, but it was also challenged and characters were given so much room for growth. Many took it. My words and thoughts can't do this book justice, and that's how I felt with the first as well. I fell in love with this town (as well as hated it) and cared so much for Maya and Benji. If you can bear reading about horrible and heartbreaking events in this town, I'd 100% recommend reading this series. This book will move you and make you cry but it'll be worth every moment

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully written, brilliantly plotted, and undeniably affecting! Us Against You takes us back to the small-town of Beartown where the fate of the Bears is now looking grim, a scheming politician has a hidden agenda, families are still struggling to recover from the violence that shattered their sense of security, and residents are still reeling from the sex scandal that tore their community apart and took down their shining star. The prose is vivid, lyrical, and eloquent. The characters are fragile, tormented, and raw. And the absorbing, astute plot takes us on a heart-wrenching rollercoaster ride of love, loss, friendship, family, rivalry, fear, hope, loyalty, resilience, economic uncertainty, political ambition, violence, hockey, and the weight of responsibility. Us Against You is a poetic, gritty, philosophical tale that reminds us just how delicate the line between love and hate and right and wrong can truly be. It’s dark, poignant, and touching and with the incredible depth, authenticity, superb character development, and exceptional insight into human frailty we’ve come to expect from Backman it’s not just a good novel it’s great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartbreaking, Beautiful,Amazing I can't even explain how much I love Fredrik Backman's writing style. I'm so so glad I follow Lauren Mcphillips on Instagram & found Beartown through her partnership with Indigo. It introduced me to my new favorite author. Honestly I was unsure about a sequel, I wasn't sure where he would take the story after book one but Us vs Them is somehow even better! If not just as good. I laughed, I cried, I yelled at the characters multiple times, Backman's writing is just everything. I 100% recommend this book to any and everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even better than Beartown... somehow! The one thing that made Us Against You even better than Beartown in my opinion (something I thought would be impossible) was that the characters were already familiar, so we could jump right into the story without having to introduce people, setting...etc. This book - just like its predecessor - is a true emotional rollercoaster. You feel all the things and are constantly anticipating another stomach-dropping event, and then it's over way too quickly. Fredrik Backman is a master storyteller and I will continue to physically shove this series into everyone's hands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beartown sequel does not disappoint! Beartown was one of the hit books from the past year, but at the end of it I felt that there were many more stories that needed to be told. The sequel, Us Against You, continues the stories of the people of Beartown just weeks after an incident that divided the town forever. Against a backdrop of Hockey, politics and pride, this book digs deeper into the lives of the residents of Beartown and their foes in Hed. I enjoyed the storytelling into the lives of the characters in Us Against You more than in the author's first book. This book is about passions, dreams, schemes, loyalty and community, and the book moves at the pace of the sport that the author writes about to a thrilling conclusion. From the author that brought you A Man Called Ove, Beartown and others, Fredrik Bachman has crafted a tale set in Swedem that just as well could take place anywhere in Canada.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Follow up to Beartown I am a huge fan of Fredrik Backman's books. His last, Beartown, was superb. (my review) I was thrilled when I found out there was a sequel - Us Against You. I wanted to know what happened next..... Us Against You picks up where Beartown left off. After an unthinkable crime, can the hockey mad Beartown ever pick up the pieces? Their team is disbanded, their funding non existent, they have no coach and there are cracks in the town's support system. An unnamed narrator again guides us through the months after that event. The basis of Us Against You is hockey, but it's the story of the players, their supporters and their plans, hopes, dreams and schemes. And it is this exploration that has made these two novels five star reads for me. The cast is large and diverse, with the young players affecting me the most. Their stories are poignant and so well written. But it is also about hockey and how that desire to win and conquer rivals can also lead down some disturbing paths. (And really, it's not that far from the truth) "In many years’ time we may not know what to call this story. We will say it was a story about violence. About hate. About conflict and difference and communities that tore themselves apart. But that won’t be true, at least not entirely. It’s also a different sort of story." And just like Beartown, it's a helluva story. I chose to listen to this latest. The reader was Marin Ireland, a narrator I have previously enjoyed. She's chosen a voice that suits the unnamed narrator - the almost dispassionate tone of an observer, not a player. This was quite effective, lending more weight to the words themselves. That's not to say there isn't any movement to her voice - there is. She articulates well and her voice is pleasant to listen to. Us Against You is storytelling at its finest. Absolutely recommended listening or reading, but make sure to read Beartown first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Backman Does It Again I picked this up while visiting the US as it was already released there. I was a little hesitant about a Beartown sequel as I loved it so much, but Us Against You is equally as gut wrenching, emotional, and well written. Backman's portrait of a small town united by a sport that allows them to overcome their differences amongst each other and heal from turmoil is compelling and well written. I cannot recommend Backman enough - he just doesn't write a bad book! You won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just As Good As Beartown I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. It has already been released in the United States, however, the Canadian release date is set for September 4, 2018. In this sequel to Beartown, we reconnect with all the characters that we loved or in some instances, drove us crazy. The start of this book picks up pretty much where Beartown left off. The local hockey team is in jeopardy because the star players have gone to the rival team of Hed to play and the Beartown hockey club is bankrupt. Peter’s job is in jeopardy and his marriage is in trouble; Maya is still recovering from her rape, Leo is a lost soul and tensions are on the rise between Beartown and Hed. Entering the scene is a new character, Theo, who is a politician and master manipulator. He starts pulling strings behind the curtains ratcheting up the tension between the two towns by deliberately setting people off against each other. Once again Backman writes the story with compelling characters showing us that we can feel empathy and forgiveness to others even if we do not agree with their beliefs or actions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely wonderful I absolutely love this book. The characters are endearing and awful and everything else that a real person is made of. Each section leaves you at the edge of your seat (so of course you have to keep reading) and it contains many heartwarming and shattering moments. Backman kills it, as always.
