A super-powered battle of genius, cruelty, and the lengths one will go for vengeance—V. E. Schwab returns with the end to the Villains duology

Magneto and Professor X. Superman and Lex Luthor. Victor Vale and Eli Ever.

Sydney Clarke once had Serena—beloved sister, betrayed enemy, powerful ally. But now she's alone, except for her thrice-dead dog, Dol. And then there's Victor, who thinks Sydney doesn't know about his most recent act of vengeance.

Victor himself is under the radar these days—being buried and re-animated can strike concern even if one has superhuman powers. But despite his own worries, his anger remains. And Eli Ever still has yet to pay for the evil he has done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Victor and Eli Are Back! I honestly cannot get over how amazing this book series has been. When I finished VICIOUS, I literally ran to my desk to grab VENGEFUL and dive back into the story. If anything, it was even more brutal than the name suggests! The body count is extremely high, and the characters all reached the peaks of their despair. The characters, both new and old, are fascinating and, aside from Sydney and Mitch and maaaaybe Stell, none of them are "good." Which just makes it an even more compelling story. I found both Victor and Eli's separate stories to be engaging and desperate in their own ways. Sydney also grows, and I like the way her character arc ends. Mitch is always wonderful, and I found that Dominic had a very engaging plot line as well. The new characters, June and Marcella, are very, very interesting and devastating with their powers. There were a few plot lines that were left ambiguous, mostly regarding June and her motives, but it just begs for a little more consideration and thought. All in all, this story moved at a faster clip and had some more action, especially near the ending. It also gave rise to a side villain who was even more sadistic than the main series villains, who were at least sympathetic! Given the ending, which was brutal but also coincides with the characters still standing at the end, I doubt there will be more books in this series. But I can hope. It's stunningly written, the characters are original and unforgettable, and it's a spectacular story where the villains are the stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally! So happy that Victoria decided to continue with this series, and this book doesn't disappoint! The only negative is I found some parts were dragged out a little too long.
