Veronica Franco, Courtesan and Poet, a poetical interpretation of the life of a historical figure from sixteenth-century Venice, examines the paradoxical situation of a woman whose mind and sensibility have been highly developed - to the point that she became a recognized and respected poet- but only for the purpose of better serving clients. We see her in relation to several of the men in her life of whom she loves and is loved by. Because of her status as a prostitute however, there is no possibility of a conventional union. As we a series of flashbacks in which Veronica sees herself reliving the significant moments of her life, we come to appreciate wit, intelligence, and courage with which she deals with he difficult social circumstances. She lives in Italy.
The Florentine Maraini published her first novel, "La Vacanza" (The Holiday), which treats the theme of contemporary female sexuality, in 1962.
