Another reason for the decay and ultimate discontinu ance of visitations was, that they were being superseded in utility in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by the more democratic provision that all baptisms, marriages, and burials should be registered in parishes, much as the utility of parish registers is being superseded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by the civil registration of all births.
