Bruna is the youngest of seven children, living an idyllic life in a small village in Italy in the 1940s. The only complication is the fact that her father lives far away, forcing her mother to raise the family alone. As the Second World War unfolds in Europe their lives remain largely unchanged. In 1943, Bruna's biggest disappointment is that food rationing means there is no cake to celebrate her fourteenth birthday. The Italian leader Mussolini's allegiance with Hitler and the distant reports of fighting seem far away from their lives. When war finally comes to their region, Bruna struggles to cope as her brothers become caught up in the resistance and Nazi soldiers descend to occupy their village. Bruna must help her mother and sisters stand up to the occupying soldiers. Her peaceful life is turned upside down by the fact that her beloved little village –the only front left defended by the Nazis in Italy – is now the centre of the final stage of fighting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this beautiful story As an educator, I recommend this as a must read for any history elementary/secondary school program. It gives a human dimension to the Second World War story. Loved reading it to my class.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Map of Europe I saw the map of Europe which is from an ancient time as Graziani, is a history major, and the fact that the book was published in 2015 she could have placed an appropriate map of Europe as the war of independence occurred in early 1991 and Yugoslavia no longer exists. If you want children to relate to real stories and be aware then as a history major present appropriate up to date maps. There is no thing as Yugoslavia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a find!! I loved it. This book was recommended to me by a friend. I've read it, my son and daughter have read it. It is an educational book that gives you a peek into a little known event in WWII, but does so by bringing the reader into the life of a young girl, who life is turned upside down by Nazi's invading her mountain village. I will admit, I cried at the end - so moving. A great read for all ages.

War in My Town is an incredibly rich historical narrative... Any history lesson about WWII would be incomplete without a recommendation to read this book. - Canadian Teacher Magazine
