Why would a talented young woman enter into a torrid affair with hunger, drugs, sex, and death? Through five lengthy hospital stays, endless therapy, and the loss of family, friends, jobs, and all sense of what it means to be "normal," Marya Hornbacher lovingly embraced her anorexia and bulimia -- until a particularly horrifying bout with the disease in college put the romance of wasting away to rest forever. A vivid, honest, and emotionally wrenching memoir, Wasted is the story of one woman's travels to reality's darker side -- and her decision to find her way back on her own terms.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An exceptionally well written memoir. I came across this book while randomly browsing the shelves in my local bookstore. I picked it up because even though it did seem long, it also seemed like it would be full of information and insight, which turns out it definitely was! This memoir is written in the perspective of someone presently battling with eating disorders, therefore, I must admit that it can be triggering to some people, however, it also gives you a direct look at the life that the illnesses take over. It shows how peoples lives change and how they and their families and loved ones are affected by these illnesses. This can give more information to those who do not understand eating disorders and it can help educate them to give them a better understanding. It is a very long book, however, it is filled with a lot of content that I find is vital to giving this memoir the meaning that it has. It is very interesting, therefore passes by pretty quickly. Hence, do not get intimidated by the length of it. What I also loved about this book is how every detail of her diagnosis, life, disorder and procedures are explained. It gives you the full look at what eating disorders do to some people. It is an exceptionally well written memoir that I definitely recommend. You will not regret it, and you will finish this memoir with more insight about the topic, more than you thought was possible.
