We Are Water is a disquieting and ultimately uplifting novel about a marriage, a family, and human resilience in the face of tragedy, from Wally Lamb, the New York Times bestselling author of The Hour I First Believed and I Know This Much Is True.

After 27 years of marriage and three children, Anna Oh—wife, mother, outsider artist—has fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her success. They plan to wed in the Oh family’s hometown of Three Rivers in Connecticut. But the wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandora’s Box of toxic secrets—dark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs’ lives.

We Are Water is a layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohs—nonconformist, Anna; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest. It is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.

With humor and compassion, Wally Lamb brilliantly captures the essence of human experience and the ways in which we search for love and meaning in our lives.

Wally Lamb is the author of four previous novels, including theNew York Timesand national bestsellerThe Hour I First BelievedandWishin' and Hopin', a bestselling novella. His first two works of fiction,She's Come UndoneandI Know This Much Is True, were both number-oneNew York Timesbestsellers and Oprah's Book Club selections. He lives ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good read if you commit! I bought this as something I wouldn't typically buy. I found the characters fascinating but the story a little slow. If you are willing to commit to it and can get past the first half, the second half is riveting and I couldn't put it down.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good characters & story I loved this story of family relationships, love and secrets that ripple through the generations. This is a story of a marriage that failed; how and why. And it's more than that; it's family, resilience, strength.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hmmmm I loved Wally Lamb's 'I Know This Much Is True', it's one of my all-time favorite books. So, it's hard for Lamb to compete with my love for that book. 'We Are Water' is similar to IKTMIT in that it's very easy to read. The characters are likeable and their stories are interesting enough that you want to find out what happens to them. There would certainly be a lot to discuss if you were going to choose this as a book club book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good not great This story is easy to read and has a plot line that touches on some important content; race, love, sexuality, relationships, abuse and creativity. I found it to be an interesting story, but somehow with topics as emotional as the aforementioned, it failed to really connect in a deep and meaningful way. Nevertheless, it is well structured and interesting read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from We are water Although a very good read I did not enjoy it as much as I usually would do a Wally Lamb book. Don't get me wrong, it is wonderfully written but the story lines were just a little bit predictable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! Oh my goodness I loved this book. Once I started I couldn't put it down. I admit that the chapters written from Kent's point of view gave me the heebie geebies but the rest of the book was astonishing. I especially loved the end. Andrew and Orion discussing We Are Water and what that truly means. One of the other things about this book that I loved was the way it all tied together. Every story or nuance tied with another is such a way that you don't even notice until the end. I felt really emotional about the characters. The way various traumas of their pasts affected their futures. The snow ball effect of one tragic event leading to another and another. It was heart wrenching reading it. Especially for different points of view. Books like these can be so powerful when written in the first person. Really getting into the mind of the speaker. Reminds me of when Orion spoke of reading fiction and brain function. The path to healing for the characters really affected me as well. I felt that I was taking the journey with them. The mark of a great author. To be pulled so deeply into a story that you are not just reading it but feeling it as well. I would have liked one more chapter from Annie's POV at the end. To see what her emotional state was. How she was dealing with the aftermath of all that had happened. Coping with therapy and what happened to Orion. Her life with Viveca now that they are married. I have never read a Wally Lamb book before and now that I have I am going to read another one. 2 thumbs up, 5 out of 5.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Long but Worthwhile An interesting perspective on childhood trauma, secrets and the lifelong effects on victims and their families. Lamb's writing is one of a kind and a pleasure to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An emotional read Another well written novel by Wally Lamb. Written from the perspective of the each character so you get a really deep understanding of how each person views and experiences the same period of time. I had very strong reactions to many of the characters and found it interesting to hear from their first person voice to understand their motivations...made me realize more about myself from my judgments of the character's choices. An intense story, deep characters and clean writing. I enjoyed reading this book.
