about

The body of a teenage boy is discovered in a Kansas field. The murder haunts Donna—a recent widow battling cancer—calling forth troubling details from long-suppressed memories of her past. Hoping to discover more about "disappeared" people, she turns to her son, Scott, who is fighting demons of his own. Addicted to methamphetamines and sleeping pills, Scott is barely holding on—though the chance to help his mother in her strange and desperate search holds out a slim promise of some small salvation.

But what he finds is a boy named Otis handcuffed in a secret basement room, and the questions that arise seem too disturbing even to contemplate. With his mother's health rapidly deteriorating, he must surrender to his own obsession, and unravel Otis's unsettling connections to other missing teens . . . and, ultimately, to Scott himself.

The author of two novels and a volume of poetry, Scott Heim has written for numerous publications, includingThe Advocate,Village Voice, and Nerve.com. He lives in Boston.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from dysfunctional family Another depressing book from Scott Heim. His characters dysfunctional relationship with their family, especially the mothers. Not as angsty as Mysterious Skin but enough to make me shed tears here and there... This books remind me a lot of True Detective, the tv series one, the setting: out of nowhere and backward city; the characters and the disappearing people :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We Disappear Was not sure about reading this book at first, but so glad I did. I saw so much of me in the story. As the sole and primary care giver to my mother since my father died so much mirrored my life. Just as the sister "checked out a long time ago" my brothers have as well. Although the only drugs I take is Zoloft. I too rub my mom's feet, she talks about the past, I see in this story what the end will be, I hope I can be as strong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breaks my heart I have read a lot, A LOT of gay themed novels. Among them, Call me by your name by Aciman, and this book, We disappear keep me coming back for more. Every word written is like a drop of blood dripping out from the writers heart. I have read the history of how this book was finished so it meant much much more to me now. I luckily got the signed copy too at WBB :) That said, the book is really really good. It is worth your time and money spent on it. Highly recommended.
