about

Six. That was the number of people killed every minute of every hour of the day, for one hundred days.  The dead lay there mutilated, raped, disfigured, and dismembered. They were strewn across the African countryside, piled up in empty churches, and thrown in the lakes and rivers.

Alphonse and Thacienne had their dream life. They were in love, they had five children, and they pastored a great church in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali. But in 1994 it all came to a cataclysmic end as almost one million people were slaughtered in an eruption of violence that lasted three months. As Alphonse is trapped in his church fighting to stay alive, Thacienne embarks on a courageous journey to get her children to safety, holding hope that she will be reunited with her husband.

Written by one of the survivors,We Were Royal Refugees is the gripping and heart-wrenching true story of the horror, loss, forgiveness, and triumph of a family in one of the worst tragedies in modern history, the Rwandan genocide.

Chris Karuhije is a former refugee who miraculously escaped the 1994 Rwanda genocide. His story of survival, purpose, and forgiveness is both intense and inspiring and will keep you on the edge of your seat. He and his wife, Kristy, are parents of twin girls, London Kate and Kyleigh Anne, who were born 3.5 months premature but miracu...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from History steeped in His Story As I read this book I found myself stifled by the depths of generational hatred that worked so hard to rob a beloved people of simply everything. Ahhh but that's not the end of the story!! Throughout the pages, the stories and the recounting is the beauty that rises from ashes. Is the powerful love that overcomes hatred and the life-changing truth that faith in Jesus's salvation for eternity and for today, is the lifeline to the freedom so desired. History is one thing, His Story triumphs over it. Love it! Thank you, Chris and your whole family for the courage to tell the story. I will read it again and again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enlightening and inspiring and a great reminder that no matter our background we are all royal! I love how Chris started off the story as him writing a letter to his daughters London and Kyleigh who fought their own courageous battle when they were born prematurely at 26 weeks followed by a 3.5 month NICU stay then transitions into his and his families incredible story to make sure they know their families legacy. I truly felt like I was there as I read this book. He has a really amazing way of bringing the reader into the story where you feel all of the emotions that go with it. Through these pages you will see such overwhelming darkness at what took place in the Rwandan Genocide that it is hard to believe what so many went through yet you will see a glimmer of light and hope shining through this families story and their faith in God even in the midst of great loss and tragedy. Not only will you be enlightened at what took place during this time but you will also be encouraged and inspired as you walk through your own life battles. This book is a must read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A heartfelt, moving, inspirational story - I coudn't put the book down! How do you survive and thrive in the storms of this life? A genocide that attempts to wipe out your tribe. Leaving everything you know not because you want to but because you have to. Watching your kids struggle for life in the hospital. How do you find forgiveness, have peace, hold on to hope, and even experience joy? I am so grateful for this true, heartfelt, vulnerable story - it will inspire, leave you in owe of the love a father has for his family, and how there's a even bigger story the Father is writing in our life. I read the entire book in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. Thank you for sharing your story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly proof that God is faithful!! This book was absolutely captivating, I could not put it down! I love that the author is writing this as a story to his little girls to let them know about their grandparents and how hard they fought for them to have the life that they have now. It was heartbreaking reading about what innocent people were put through in the Rwandan genocides, but informative. But the thing that really stood out was the faith that this family held throughout these hardships when they could have just given up, and how God truly can shine no matter what the circumstances may be. Even though they were faced with hatred from others they did not have hatred towards them in return. They were truly carrying the “Light of God” wherever they went and you could tell just by reading this story that they were amazing individuals. The Karuhije Family were truly Royal Refugees!! I would highly recommend this read to anyone!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Story of Hope, Perseverance and God's Faithfulness I was honoured and privileged to get to read this book before it was released and I have to say it is a must read. I was in tears reading about the treacherous experiences so many people went through during the Rwanda Genocide. The struggle's many faced, the terror and the fear that was endured during such an awful event in history was hard to read through, but the hope, the perseverance and the love between Chris's parents was truly inspiring. Reading about Chris's parents, who they were, there beliefs, what they stood for, and the legacy they left to everyone who crossed their paths was heartfelt and touching. During such a treacherous time all they wanted to do was show love, show grace, show mercy and save as many people as they could. This book not only is inspiring, but it will make you want to do better as individuals to bring peace and unity to those around you. It will show you what true character looks like and that God is so faithful during every season of life.

Editorial Reviews

“The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?” the Psalmist asked. In these pages you will journey with a household of faith through one of the heaviest moments of human history— the Rwandan genocide of 1994.  Chris Karuhije and his family escaped the slaughter that took over a million lives in 100 days of horror.  When I interviewed him on national television in 2008, I expected an oppressive return to that atrocity. But like the author, this stirring testimony radiates Jesus!  “We weren’t saved for nothing” Chris boldly declared, on 100 Huntley Street.  The book I knew he would write is right on-time with the troubled and uncertain world we are facing today.   Royal encouragement awaits!—Moira Brown, co-host of 100 Huntley Street,Canada’s longest daily talk show andone of Canada’s top 100 Christian Women Leaders.
