about

From the creators of the #1 international hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale comes an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is also a poignant look at the ways in which we all struggle to find ourselves . . . no matter where we live.

Welcome to Night Vale . . . a friendly desert community somewhere in the American Southwest. In this ordinary little town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are commonplace parts of everyday life, the lives of two women, with two mysteries, are about to converge.

Pawnshop proprietor Jackie Fierro abides by routine. But a crack appears in the standard order of her perpetually nineteen-year-old life when a mysterious man in a tan jacket gives her a slip of paper marked by two pencil-smudged words: KING CITY. Everything about the man unsettles her, especially the paper that she cannot remove from her hand. Yet when Jackie puts her life on hold to search for the man, no one who meets him can seem to remember anything about him.

Diane Crayton’s fifteen-year-old son, Josh, is moody and a shape-shifter. Lately, Diane has started to see the boy’s father everywhere she goes, looking the same as he did the day he left when they were teenagers. Josh is growing ever more curious about his estranged father—leading to a disaster Diane can see coming but is helpless to prevent.

Diane’s search to reconnect with her son and Jackie’s search to reclaim her routine life draw them increasingly closer to each other, and to this place that may hold the key to their mysteries and their futures . . . if they can ever find it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So weird and awesome I love Night Vale and this book was such a great story in this world. The humor is fun and weird and the story all ties together. It's a great read and I would recommend it to anyone. Probably after they've listened to an episode or two though, the writing style is a little weird to jump into blind. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've read it seven times. I love this book. I got it relatively soon after it was released and I've been loving it ever since. It follows a cast separate from the podcast, but manages to keep that same feeling. It's a heartwarming story of danger in a small town, love, loss, and family and i definitely recommend it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surreal! I know of the podcast, but I've never listened to it. Even so, I had no trouble picking up this book. It's all rather surreal and weird, but the characters are surprisingly compelling and the story itself has some pretty incisive social commentary.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AMAZING I've been listening to WTNV for over 4 years and when they released the book I knew I had to have it. It was just as amazing and weird as I could have hoped

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Brilliantly Bizarre Fink and Cranor take the absurdity and off beat humor of the WTNV podcasts, and pack it into a novel about mystery and the meaning of family that's full of heart and verve

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's Nightvale, through and through Utterly absurd, brilliant, witty, cynical, and at turns, all too real and brutally honest. Plot was mundane, but really, when it's Night Vale, you're not after a plot. Any time spent in this world is time well worth it. Bonus: listen to the audio book to be swathed in the lullaby lilt of Cecil Baldwin - the only way that Night Vale should be consumed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I love exploring a different side of the little desert community where the sun is hot, the moon is beautiful, and mysterious lights pass overhead as we all pretend to sleep.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Writing!!!!!!!!!! The clever writing and crazy lore is packed in this book with an original story that is super useful to know for some of the later podcast episodes

Editorial Reviews

Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel is easily enjoyed on its own terms - even for those who are new to the town of Night Vale - largely because the storytelling shines so brightly on the level of its individual parts.”
