Peter Mangold was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England on January 3, 1947. He received a degree in history from King's College, Cambridge and a PhD in international relations at the London School of Economics. He worked in the Foreign Office from 1972 until 1977 and then for the BBC from 1977 until 1997. He wrote several books on international politics including From Tirpitz to Gorbachev, Success and Failure in British Foreign Policy, The Almost Impossible Ally: Harold Macmillan and Charles de Gaulle, and What the British Did: Two Centuries in the Middle East. In 2013 he won the Edith McLeod literary prize for Britain and the Defeated French: From Occupation to Liberation 1940-1944. He died of cancer in May 2017 at the age of 70.
