Rated 4 out of 5 by from A thinking person's book From the start, the book draws you in to an evocative, atmospheric venue, peopled with often venal corrupt characters as you follow a young man travelling from an almost monastic existence to a world he struggles to make sense of while at the same time trying to fit in. The conflict develops as he tries to both excel and be noticed, while still hiding himself. It's a book you think about for some time after you've read it...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nacht und Tag This is a solid debut from Amiri, about identity, madness, and rock n' roll. The book is reminiscent of Jerzy Kosinski's "Pinball" (although it is better than that foray) and the author has an impressionistic style that veers toward the poetic at times. There are some twists and turns, though not so many that they become a gimmick. Sex and violence are also found in abundance, but both are integral to the story and well-described, which keeps the proceedings from becoming gratuitous. Recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This will surprise you! This will surprise you! Find a comfortable seat and prepare to sit on the edge of it for a while. Tina Amiri has spun an intricate tale of torment in this tragically unconventional coming- of- age story. Whatever the Impulse will gently invite you into a dysfunctional world of innocence, then catapult you into state of suspense and soul-crushing seduction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More Than Worthwhile With the Prologue, this story grabbed me. I am not someone who normally gets 'caught up' in characters in a novel, but I was with Night the entire way. His story is complex and unpredictable; it's a different twist on 'finding yourself'...and losing so much. I recommend this so highly to anyone interested in a psychological thrill...it has just the right amount of action and sexiness going on, too!
