Rated 5 out of 5 by from Humorous, fun, and touching I re-read this book everytime I need a "pick me up." Sham is thief turned magical investigator / actress with a wickedly funny sense of humor. She is smart, funny, brave, and compassionate. I just love her acting. It made me laugh out loud several times. Wonderful standalone book, which is very rare these days. The other books in this world (Steal the Dragon and Masques) are really standalones that are simply set in the same universe. This book is fun to read, and I simply loved the two main characters. The side characters are also very interesting. The mystery and magic in the story draw the reader in, and the world is unique without being overwhelming, like some fantasy novels. Definitely worth buying.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read. The feisty, intelligent thief Sham is called upon to save Southwood from something that stalks its streets. Using her mage-powers and her ability to think on her feet, she saves the day. She also made me laugh quite a bit! What an impish sense of humour. Irresistible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Wonderful Read I love this book. It's funny and touching and warm, and I really care about the characters. Patricia Briggs has written a couple of other books set in the same universe (Masques and Steal the Dragon), though unfortunately they're out of print, and I've only managed to find StD so far. :( Have a look through your library and used book stores; don't pass up a chance to get any of them. StD is just as beautifully written as When Demons Walk; I give both of them my highest marks, and I'm sure I'll do the same for Masques when I find it. Not many authors can make you laugh and cry and feel like this. I can hardly wait for her next book. One warning: don't start reading When Demons Walk at night if you have to get up early the next day...
