Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow, What a Great Start to a New Series! "Come one, come all to the Brookstone Wild West Extravaganza!"  Who could turn down an invitation like that?  I certainly could not, and I’m glad to have accepted.  “When You are Near” by acclaimed author Tracie Peterson is the first book I have read by this author, but certainly will not be the last.  With a unique storyline centering around the star trick rider of the Brookstone Wild West Extravaganza, this novel is the first in a series to follow the stories of three ladies in this all-female performance. The main story is centered on Lizzy Brookstone, but there are various other character’s stories intertwined in the tight-knit community of the extravaganza performers and employees.  One of these characters is Ella Fleming, who is running from dire circumstances of cruelty, extortion, and murder in her Kentucky home.  The various aspects of this story-line, and a couple of others, are not pleasant to read about, but are treated as the evils that they are. One of my favourite parts of this book was the emotional and spiritual journey of Lizzy.  So many important lessons of loss, love, and opening your heart again were portrayed in her character.  I believe Lizzy’s story will touch many readers who have experienced any kind of loss in their life, whether it be loss of a person, or something else.   Honestly, I was impressed by so many aspects of this book.  The story was unique and intriguing, the characters were realistic and relatable, the messages were inspiring and timeless, and the romantic content clean and uplifting.  I couldn’t ask for much more, except maybe sequels which I understand are on the way, and will certainly not be missed by me! “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wildly entertaining I just love a good story of a damsel-in-distress who takes matters into her own hands and with pluck and courage does what she needs to get herself out of trouble (well, maybe with a wee bit of help along the way). And Peterson's latest novel features not just one but a group of such women who simply put us men to shame, and I was fascinated by their trick riding (especially since I can barely ride a horse, myself) and sharp-shooting, and their determination to right the wrongs in their life. Peterson has succeeded at crafting characters that are well outside the norm of what may be expected of them in that day and age, and I honestly wish I could go back in time and meet these characters, they are just that intriguing. And I will admit it's not just the female characters who inspire, but the male characters as well (though of course there are the villains here too!) Peterson has woven in some mystery and suspense, and done an artful job at wrapping up this story while leaving readers hungry for the next book in the series. For those of you readers hungering for romance, have no fear - she has added just the right touch to please both male and female readers alike, and leave them with a smile on their faces. When You are Near was entertaining from start to finish and I have no doubt that Tracie Peterson's fans are going to absolutely be held spell-bound by this series if the next two are are interesting as this one! I award this novel a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Travelling Show with a Travelling Family When You Are Near by Tracie Peterson A trick-rider in the family business, The Brookstone Wild West Extravaganza, made for an interesting life. In her late twenties, Lizzy, had seen her fair share of America and a fair share of tragedy. Her father’s death and a broken heart had her questioning what her life was and would become. She had some important decisions to make about her future. Ella Fleming comes into the picture and maybe this could change all things. Ella comes to them fleeing a dangerous future and forced betrothal. These two women face not only their personal lives future but that of the Brookstone Show. They find out what really matters in life. This is the first of the Brookstone Brides #1 series. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A captivating start to an exciting new series An all-female Wild West show -- what a spectacular setting for a series! Loved getting an insider's view of trick-riding and managing a traveling show in 1900. Living quarters in a train car sounds so exciting (a childhood dream of mine, in fact!) But though the story begins 'on the road' in Washington DC, half of the book takes place on a Montana ranch so we get some 'real' wild west action as well! When You Are Near is the first book in Peterson's Brookstone Brides series and the author does a great job of introducing readers to a bevy of memorable characters including the three women destined to be the heroines of their own stories. Love the way the story built, as Ella and Mary were added to the mix. These women are stronger than they realize and friendship binds them in a special way. There's more than one dastardly villain to thwart (though I fear they will go on to wreck havoc in future books), a complicated romance to untangle and a solid faith thread that weaves it all together. A captivating start to an exciting new series. Book provided courtesy of Baker Publishing and Graf-Martin Communications Inc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First novel in Brookstone Brides series When You Are Near is the first book in the new Brookstone Brides series. I thought it was well-written story with strong female characters. The pacing is just right for this story (not too fast nor too slow). Lizzy Brookstone is a clever and determined woman who can do tricks on horses (wow). Her father’s death has hit her hard and her heart is no longer in the show. Plus, she is now twenty-eight and the tricks are beginning to take their toll on her body. Unfortunately, Lizzy is the shows main attraction. The show would not last without her unless she can find someone else to fill her saddle. After seeing how her father’s death affected her mother, Lizzy is afraid to let her love someone that completely. The author included historical details that enhance the story. The Christian elements are woven into the story beautifully and I appreciated the Bible verses included. One of my favorite phrases was “God guides us through our sorrows”. I completely understood what Lizzy was going through since I lost my father three years ago. What Lizzy needs to realize is that God is always there for us. I enjoyed the adventure and action in this story. There are characters for readers to love and root for as well as those we will love to dislike. Tracie Peterson crafted wonderful characters for this series. I like that there is a mixture of people from an English gentleman to a horse wrangler. It was interesting to learn what went into to running a wild west show. When You Are Near has love, loss, faith, friendship, family, justice and God. I am eager to read the next Brookstone Brides novel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great beginning to a new series When You Are Near is the first in Tracie Peterson's Brookstone Brides series and I can't wait for the rest of the series. I have not read much of Peterson's work in the past but her name would always catch my eye and I'd think, I have to get that book and read it. After reading this one I realize I have a lot of catching up to do! When You Are Near is a book that touches on real-life difficulties. The characters struggle with feelings of fear and guilt that readers can easily relate to. I like how the author helps each of them work through those struggles with the help of family, friends and their faith. The author gives lots of background regarding the travels, trials, and triumphs of a Wild-West show which was interesting and kept my pages turning. So looking forward to the next book...who will be Brookstone Bride #2? I received a complimentary copy of this book via CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own.
