Rated 3 out of 5 by from don't bother Charles Callahan is reminded of his first love, Sian Richards when he chances across the picture of her in the newspaper. Charles met Sian at a summer camp in his late teens. He decides to write a letter to her and warily she answers him back. Charles is in the midst of financial woes but has a wife and three children. Sian is living on a farm with one child. The letter-writing becomes more and more intense until a meeting is arranged and then an affair starts. I liked the premise of lost love but found this book to be way off the mark. First of all, this was lust and not anything approaching love. I find it hard to believe an all-encompassing love could be found at a summer camp and left behind all those years while each of them found alternate partners. The ending also was completely unsatisfying.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What Happened? Having read the Pilot's Wife I had high expectations for this novel. In a nutshell, I was disappointed. The characters were unlikable, not well developed and the plot unbelievable. Seemed to me that the ending was an eager attempt to wrap up the story quickly because the author could'nt think of a proper conclusion. Would pass this one by without hesitation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Selfishness Anita Shreve writes beautiful, insightful novels. This one is about a middle aged man and woman, who are both married to others, and have children. They happen to find each other. They begin to correspond secretly, knowing where it will lead. The book captures the selfishness of adultery, and the madness that overtakes a person when they feel they are "in love" finally, but married to the wrong person. They'll do anything to be together. I've seen this many times. It's tragic, all around, as you see that once again, their timing is wrong in relation to each other, with great consequence to their families. If people would put as much effort into improving the marriage they're in, instead of chasing dreams of unfulfilled romances, there would be fewer broken families. I'm not unromantic, but don't wedding vows mean anything? Also, if this couple had had cell phones, it wouldn't have ended as it did, but then, it was written in 1993.

Editorial Reviews

Throughout this finely wrought book, Ms. Shreve manages to keep the reader suspended between despair and hope for Sian and Charles. But Where or When is more than just an exquisitely written novel. It is also a gripping yarn."-The New York Times Book Review"Ms. Shreve writes with a delicate restraint that lends force and immediacy to this somberly romantic story."-The Wall Street Journal "
