Winner of the Edgar® Award for Best Fact Crime

The true account of one boy’s lifelong search for his boarding-school bully.

Equal parts childhood memoir and literary thriller, Whipping Boy chronicles prize-winning author Allen Kurzweil’s search for his twelve-year-old nemesis, a bully named Cesar Augustus. The obsessive inquiry, which spans some forty years, takes Kurzweil all over the world, from a Swiss boarding school (where he endures horrifying cruelty) to the slums of Manila, from the Park Avenue boardroom of the world’s largest law firm to a federal prison camp in Southern California.

While hunting down his tormentor, Kurzweil encounters an improbable cast of characters that includes an elocution teacher with ill-fitting dentures, a gang of faux royal swindlers, a crime investigator “with paper in his blood,” and a  onocled grand master of the Knights of Malta. Yet for all its global exoticism and comic exuberance, Kurzweil’s riveting account is, at its core, a heartfelt and suspenseful narrative about the “parallel lives” of a victim and his abuser.

A scrupulously researched work of nonfiction that renders a childhood menace into an unlikely muse, Whipping Boy is much more than a tale of karmic retribution; it is a poignant meditation on loss, memory, and mourning, a surreal odyssey born out of suffering, nourished by rancor, tempered by wit, and resolved, unexpectedly, in a breathtaking act of personal courage.

Whipping Boy features two 8-page black-and-white photo inserts and  83 images throughout.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bully story extraordinaire. A bully story extraordinaire! Everyone has a bully story in their closet; maybe they were bullied, or they bullied someone else or perhaps their kid was bullied. We can all relate to being bullied, but Allen Kurzweil's experience during his grade six year at a Swiss boarding school, is heartbreaking. I was so horrified by Kurzweil's story that I simply had to finish it to see how his search ended. That was no easy task at times because of the incredible detailed (well researched) account of a fraud scam that his bully (as an adult) was involved with. This shouldn't be a deterrent to read this book though, I'm just not that into financial details. Kurzweil writes with deep honesty and in the end we learn, that recovering from a traumatic experience often takes a lifetime.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A trial to read! This book was a real trial to read, the initial story was lost in the intricate details of international fraud. I had to force myself to finish it. However the authors'writing style and skill for narrative held my attention when I would otherwise have given up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissapointed to say the least This book is NOT about a boys search for his bully. This book is just barely about the boy and his bully at all. This book is about international fraud case that the boy and his bully have little to nothing to do with. I felt completely ripped off and wish I could get my money back! The title and synopsis are misleading. Terrible book!
