This laugh-out-loud debut is filled with hilarious awkward encounters, a supportive LGBTQ organization, and too many cheesy lyrics to count—all with the compulsive readability of Audrey, Wait! and Boy Meets Boy.

Junior Nattie McCullough has always been that under-the-radar straight girl who hangs out in the cafeteria with her gay-straight alliance friends. She’s never been the girl that gets the guy, let alone the girl that gets a hit song named after her.

But when last summer’s crush, smoking-hot musician Sebastian Delacroix—who has recently hit the mainstream big-time—returns home to play a local show, that’s just what she gets. He and his band, the Young Lungs, have written a chart-topping single—“Natalie”—which instantly makes Nattie second guess everything she thought about their awkward non-kiss at that June pool party. That it was horrific. That it meant nothing. That Sebastian never gave her another thought.

To help keep her mind off of Sebastian and his maybe-about-her, maybe-not-about-her song, Nattie throws herself into planning the school’s LGBTQIA dance. That proves problematic, too, when Nattie begins to develop feelings for her good friend Zach. With the song getting major airplay and her once-normal life starting to resemble the cover of a gossip magazine, Nattie is determined to figure out once and for all if her brief moment with Sebastian was the stuff love songs are made of—or just a one-hit wonder.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Breezy Bring this book to the beach, you won’t regret it. It’s a light contemporary romance story that does discuss serious themes from time to time. Nattie and her friends struggle to make this gay-straight alliance strong at their school and Nattie is proud some of her friends are gay or lesbian. Though what is mainly on Nattie’s mind is the new song Sebastian—her crush—composed and sang at this mini-concert. Her name is mentioned, but still, she’s not sure it’s actually about her. Though she hopes it is. I never liked Sebastian much. His song is not that great and I couldn’t stop imagining Dylan Marshall from Modern Family singing it to Haley and we all know how that relationship went. The characters are very perky, which doesn’t make them seem all that realistic. I don’t trust characters or friendships that are seemingly or literally perfect, and Nattie’s friends are the best friends someone could have. And most events are unlikely to happen in real life, but hell, this is fiction, and one can be creative with fiction. So I did like the weirdness a lot. I was hooked from the very beginning, with the mentioning of Nattie’s crazy dad, and throughout the story as more and more happened in Nattie’s life. The romance is predictable to anyone, even those who do not pay good attention, because as we get to know Nattie, we realize what her choice will be. But I liked it. I prefer guessing and satisfyingly closing a book than being awfully shocked and disbelieving a revelation.

Editorial Reviews

“Charmingly awkward and rooted in the bonds of friendship more than romance, this is a sweet, funny debut.
