Garrett is a human detective in the fantastical city of TunFaire. And now he’s getting tangled up in the worst sort of laws...

Garrett is set to stow his wandering heart with his fiancée, Strafa Algarda. But for Garrett, even true love comes with its share of headaches—namely, the Algarda family.

Strafa’s family needs Garrett’s unique skills in the worst way. Rumors are spreading that someone is organizing a Tournament of Swords—a brutal contest that magically compels the children of sorcerers to battle until only one is left alive. The winner will absorb the power from those he has killed and thus become a demigod.

Strafa and her family want to protect her daughter, Kevans, from being forced to take part in the lethal contest...and they’ve asked Garrett to find out who is organizing the tournament and nip it in the bud. The only problem is that finding the culprit is most likely impossible. But the Algardas are used to getting what they want....
Glen Cook used to work the assembly line at a General Motors plant, writing in between helping to build cars as they came down the conveyor belt. He has written extensively in the science fiction and fantasy fields, and is the author of the Garrett, P.I., novels and the Black Company alternate history series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Soft dragging Nostalgic lead I am a Glen Cook fan... loved the black company and my enjoyment of the Garrett series is a little literary pleasure I keep to myself... so, i looked forward to the arrival of this next instalment... and am in the end disappointed... where before this series had an edge, this book took me forever to get through as it was very easy to put down... Cook gathered in all the favourite players... every one got their 30 seconds of fame, but all were flat and relying on their old characters in past books... Garrett spends most of his time daydreaming of the past, and so too did I, thinking about the series that was... Garrett reflects on retiring at the end of this book and really that's what needed to happen... I think Cook had a mortgage to pay off and this instalment was it... but Garrett deserved a better end (and there is no stipulation that that is the case, only that his complicated life may end with a romantic fizzle...
