From theNew York Timesbestselling author ofTo Desire a Devilcomes this thrilling tale of danger, desire, and dark passions.

A MAN CONTROLLED BY HIS DESIRES . . .

Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London's most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand-she's spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk . . .

A WOMAN HAUNTED BY HER PAST . . .

Caire makes a simple offer-in return for Temperance's help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London's high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control-one that may well destroy them both.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh. Was hoping to find a new historical romance series to binge read but I don't think this will be the one. I never cared about the characters or felt invested in the story. I read it in a matter of hours but I skimmed over parts. I didn't bother with the snippets of some random story at the beginning of the chapters, nor did I care at all about Silence's story line. Lord Caire turned out well enough in the end, but he was a major dick the rest of the time. Temperance rather got on my nerves too. I also have no love for the "mystery" that was supposed to be propelling the story. I think I thought it would be better than it was.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Nice Start for a New Series This is my first Elizabeth Hoyt read and I really enjoyed it. It's not often that you get to see the high society of London venturing in a place like St. Giles - a place inhabited by the poorest of the poor - but the author creates a nice balance and contrast between these two worlds and she does it superbly. The main characters were very memorable because they were unconventional in many ways, but they complimented each other well. I cannot wait to continue this series

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good start to a series This was a really good book with complex and compelling characters. I loved both the main characters, the supporting characters and most especially, the setting of St. Giles in Georgian England. Ms. Hoyt is an incredible writer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 3.75 stars-entertaining : 3.75 stars---WICKED INTENTIONS is the first installment in Elizabeth Hoyt’s MAIDEN LANE historical, romance series. This is Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, and Temperance Dews’ story line. Told from dual third person perspectives WICKED INTENTIONS focuses on the search for a killer, and the building relationship between our leading couple. Widow Temperance Dews and her brother Winter Makepeace run a home for the unfortunate and orphaned children of St. Giles, London and are in desperate need of funds when an offer comes from Lord Caire that Temperance is unable to refuse. Lord Caire, a man with a reputation for the more ‘deviant’ when it comes to sex and his sexual proclivities offers up some much needed cash in exchange for Temperance’s help in looking for the person who murdered his mistress. What ensues is a relationship built upon friendship and desire, and the breakdown of a family where secrets and lies begin to crumble the foundation of love and respect. WICKED INTENTIONS is a story line of mystery, suspense, betrayal and lies. While Lord Caire and Temperance battle hooligans and thieves, Temperance’s extended family begins to disintegrate before her very eyes. The relationship between Temperance and Caire begins as a business arrangement, and nothing more-but the more time spent together, Temperance begins to see a possibility of a future with the man very few people respect or admire. The $ex scenes are intimate and sensual. We are introduced to a number of secondary and supporting characters, most of whom reside in the ton of St.Giles, London. The Ghost of St. Giles, once a rumored apparition to scare young children into bed, becomes an integral part of the night life in and around the ton. WICKED INTENTIONS is the introductory story line in Elizabeth Hoyt’s MAIDEN LANE historical romance series. The staggering differences between the ‘have and the have-nots’ are a harsh reminder of the times, a dull and dreary reality, and the suffering of those unable to look after themselves. The premise is entertaining but don’t go searching for historical accuracy. The characters are ill-fated, colorful and impassioned; the romance is slow build to a happily ever after.
