Two leading religious journals, the " Christian Union" and the "Independent," having criticised this work on account of its claims for Mr. Garrison as the leader of the anti-slavery movement, and with the manifest design of discrediting what I have said as to the attitude of the churches and the clergy in respect to that movement, I have thought it expedient to answer them here. What they have said is by no means formidable in the way of argument, but they represent such an amount of popular misapprehension and prejudice that in the interest of truth some reply appears to be called for. I shall so carefully state the substance of their criticism, for the most part in their own words, as to do them the fullest justice, and afford my readers an opportunity to form an intelligent judgment as to the points at issue between them and myself. "THE CHRISTIAN UXION." To this paper, for obvious reasons, I might have looked with confidence for at least an in'elligent and candid estimate of my work; but its criticism is of a sort which shows that it was at no pains to understand its plan, scope, and necessary limitations, as implied on the title-page, and abundantly explained in the preface and elsewhere. The reviewer evidently wrote under the influence of pre-existing theories and assumptions, paying little attention to the contents of the book itself or to the author's careful explanation of his purpose and plan.
