Willow Flower, the daughter of an Indian chief from the Yanktonai Sioux on the Minnesota River, grew up to know the ways of the Sioux with a deep understanding of their history and legends. Rescued with her mother from a severe winter storm by James Richardson, a fur trader known as Black Arrow, Willow found herself fascinated by the white man’s knowledge, honesty, and direct approach to life.

Now married to Black Arrow, Willow helps him operate his trading posts and steadily grow the business. Expansion to the west along the Missouri river followed by a new operation east of the Mississippi river has given them coverage of a vast area from the Great Lakes to the Rocky Mountains.

While supervising the movement of trade furs to Yankton Landing on the Missouri river, Willow is attacked by outcast white men on the run from Kentucky. Injured and hurting, Willow Flower fights back until there is just one white man left. For days, she follows him, seeking her personal revenge and fighting the need for food and water. When Black Arrow and his man Rene arrive on the scene they know Willow needs help. Tracking her and the man she hunts, they slowly gain ground—but will they find her in time? Willow Flower walks in a stupor of determination, fading in and out of this world and the dream world as she pushes herself, and the unborn child she carries, to the brink.
