Reeling from the autumn tragedy that changed his life forever at the close of FallGently, Buddy Williams yearns even more for the idyllic life he relished in SummerWild. Although still devastated, Buddy agrees to return to school, only to realize that not much has changed between the eleven year-old and his menacing teacher, Miss Ruby. To make matters worse, one-time ally Mr. “Army” Armitage, the school principal, seems to have run out of sympathy for Buddy’s plight.

Feeling adrift, Buddy sets out to find a better balance, but is instead vexed by one error in judgement after another, the consequences of which threaten both harmony at home and his bond with best friends, Riel and Mokey.

Will faith be salvation? Will Native teenager Joe Starblanket be able to help stop the tailspin into more serious bad behaviour? Might the blizzards of winter bring a lasting chill to Buddy’s once openly-amiable innocence?<_o3a_p>

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another hit! I read the first two books in the series quite some time ago and was left hanging at the end of book two where Buddy loses his grandfather. Book Three - WinterFree picks up and we follow Buddy during the winter months as he struggles to make sense of a world without the important influence his grandfather was. My heart breaks as his choices leave him further and further off track from the person he wants to be. I felt as abandoned as he did when the people in his world turn away leaving him trying to sort out life on his own. A little romance and some wonderful word pictures wrap the book up in another great read. I enjoyed it and was glad that the book ended on a positive note. Looking forward to book four - SpringRush.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Is it Spring Yet? I'm in a Rush! I dragged out finishing WinterFree because I didn't want it to end, at least not too soon before the release of SpringRush, the fourth and final installment in Budd's "Adventures of Buddy Williams". Like the first two books in the series, WinterFree is an exceptional read. Regardless of age or gender, Budd has a splendid ability to relate to his readers on a human-level, exploring the joys and sorrows of life and the struggles and successes we encounter. As vivid as text can be, Budd puts the reader smack dab in the middle of Buffalo Crossing, SK in the early 1950s, seeing life through the eyes of a boy, whose struggles and successes we all can relate to. Whether seemingly trivial childhood crises, or those related to Life's big questions, Budd has penned a magnificent read that will enrich the lives of all who spend a few "seasons" with Buddy. Is it Spring yet? I'm in a Rush! (Until the series is over, then I'll be wishing I could meet Buddy again for the first time!)
