From the Author

How this story came to be:"When I was a child, I was always wishing. "I wish I had a dog of my own," I would sigh. Then my grandmother would smile and say, "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." I knew she must mean my wish would not come true, but what did that have to do with horses or beggars? I now know that this saying was first used four hundred years ago. Rich people rode around on horseback or in coaches. Poor people walked. But beggars, watching the wealthy ride by, must have wished they too could have a horse." -Jean Little
