Bestselling author Kathryn Lasky is back with the thunderous story of the wolves of Ga'Hoole

In the harsh wilderness beyond the owl world of Ga'Hoole, a wolf mother hides in fear. Her newborn pup, otherwise healthy, has a twisted paw. The mother knows the rigid rules of her kind. The pack cannot have weakness. Her pup must be abandoned on an icy riverbank-condemned to die.

But alone in the forest, the pup, Faolan, does the unthinkable. He survives. This is Faolan's story, the story of a courageous wolf pup who rises up to change forever the wolves of the Beyond.

Kathryn Lasky is the Newbery Honor author of more than fifty fiction and non-fiction books, including ALA Best Book for Young Adults, Beyond the Burning Time and the wildly popular Guardians of Ga'hoole series. She and her husband live in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GREAT READS FOR THE WINTER MONTHS I figured since I purchased the Guardians of Ga'Hoole it would be interesting to get a different perspective on other animals living within the same forests. My child loves the outdoors and all though we are not familiar with this story I am sure it will be a pleasure to read based on its content and story line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Storytelling This story was amazing! It reads like a cross between The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and A Wolf Story by James Byron Huggins, both of which I love and have reread many times. The story is powerful and compelling. It is the first book set in the world of Ga'Hoole that does not focus primarily on the Owl kingdoms. It was wonderful to read, and I immediately started book two after finishing book one. I could not wait until I had even written my review. I had to know what happened next. It is the story of Faolan, a young wolf who is left to die because of a birth defect. He ends up on an ice floe in a river during the spring thaw. He is plucked from the river by a she-bear, who has just lost her cub to a cougar. The bear decides to raise him. Over time he comes to realize he is different. He grows and learns from his second milk-mother Thunderheart. She realizes she will go to the long sleep and tries to prepare Faolan. But life is not always fair and much befalls Faolan during the winter. Soon he is in search of the Wolves of the Beyond. You cannot help but fall in love with the characters in the book. My only complaint is the covers are a little too 'Disney' for the actual content of the books. It looks like it will be the beginning of an amazing trilogy. I highly recommend them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely Engaging This book was selected for my (then) 8-year-old daughter, who is fascinated by wolves. I thought it would prove to be a great snuggle and read together sort of book, given my knowledge of her Ga'Hoole series. Never have I been so utterly captivated and truly moved to tears - several times, in fact - by a children's novel. The language, while quite sophisticated at times, evokes amazing imagery that seems to absolutely mesmerize my daughter. Even my 4-year-old is often caught-up in this story, though the wording is too advanced for her. Honestly, I had a very difficult time putting this book down every evening and had to restrain myself from reading ahead! We are currently on the second of the series, and it is also a terrific read. Our interest is so piqued that we have pre-ordered the third in the series, to be released this June. Well done, Ms. Lasky!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely outstanding! I read this book for my child and she loved it so did I. It starts out with a Pregnant Female wolf, she trys to hide to give birth which they call going by-lang. She gives birth and realizes one pup is smaller than the rest with a splayed paw and an intresting marking of a spiral on his paw. She knew he would be taken to die as a malcadh a puppy who is born differntly (like a dissorded). Anoither wolf takes him away and sets him on a cracking sheet of ice on the river. the sound of the river crackling soon lets him hear soon he comes to a bear mother crying that her cub was eaten by cougars her milk wasted. the wolf pup manages to climb onto her fur. She adopts him and soon she names him Faolan and she is named thunderheart. They have there adventures together and soon thunderheart is killed by a rockslide. Now you read the book and figure out what happens next :)
