about

A #1 New York Times Bestseller, A Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, Kirkus, and Booklist Best of Children's Books 2012 -- August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that, up until now, prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid-- but his classmates can't get past Auggie's extraordinary face. Wonder begins from Auggie's point of view, but soon many perspectives converge in a portrait of one community's struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.
R. J. Palacio is a graphic designer and book jacket designer. She is the author of Wonder, 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne's Book of Precepts, and The Julian Chapter: A Wonder Story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Gradeschool Novel Study I absolutely love using this book in teaching. Some criticisms are valid (like how each point of view sounds too similar) however, it is still an engaging read with enough insight and detail to keep the ideal readership entertained, without dragging on with superfluous flowery language or details. The story DOES tie up neatly at the end (and some have criticized, not entirely realistically) but the underlying message is such a wonderful teaching point in a world where we are used to people behaving in increasingly callous ways. The reminder to "choose kind" is this books strong suit and I can see myself using it with classes for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I bought this book for my son, he simply love it, he read it 2 times and insisted me to read too. I started reading and finished just in 2 days, amazing story of brave boy!
Date published: 2017-11-20
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disapointing The concept had lots of potential but the delivery fell flat. I feel like the story and characters lack grit. Real life is messy and sometimes harsh. What the author gives us is a very superficial account of life and how people really are. This is a young adult book. They can handle more complex characters and the author fails to provide them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I listened to the audio book and I really enjoyed it. The voice was weird at first and the first part was a bit slow but the plot still gripped me. I really like that it was written in short sections describing the events and I really liked that it was written from different perspectives, even unlikely ones. Overall a very nice read with a wonderful message.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great lesson While the author's writing talents provide a bit of an awkward narrative at times, she ultimately achieves a fun book that's easy for young readers while giving a valuable lesson in not judging a book by its cover. The book has short chapters, making it ideal for young readers or parents and guardians who would like to read it to their children.

I think it's a must read for anyone between grades 4 - up to adult. It's never a bad thing to learn to be kind and choose kind. What a great kid Auggie is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Students Love This Book!!! I have been reading this to my students now the past 3 years and every year they fall in love with this plot and their favourite character Auggie! What a great book to teach empathy and acceptance. At the end of the book, one year, students gave it a standing ovation. I recommend this to all grades but especially 5/6.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from captivating So, the thing about this book was that I read it in one sitting. I opened the book right before bed and I couldn't put it down! I didn't get much sleep and was cranky at work but it was very much worth it! The voice of a 10 year old boy was captured really well! While the book was meant for a younger audience, this is definitely a book that adults can enjoy as well.
Date published: 2017-09-02
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WONDERful This was such a touching story. So powerful. Great book for kids to read to understand the meaning of kindness. Can't wait for the movie.
Date published: 2017-08-29
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for middle school readers Considering all the build up to this book from a variety of sources, I was underwhelmed. August Pullman has always been the outsider, the kid that everyone points at and whispers about. He was born with a combination of rare genetic defects that have left him physically deformed. He has been home schooled, until his parents decide it would be in his best interests to send him to grade 5. To say it was a difficult transition would be an under-statement, but Auggie sticks with it and makes friends. Young readers will find this an interesting and helpful story. It is written at a level they can understand and relate to. The message I took from the book is to be kinder than you have to be. After finishing this novel I highly recommend Ugly by Robert Hoge (the younger reader edition). It is the true life story of a boy who was born with severe facial and limb deformations and how he struggled yet continued to thrive against numerous odds. #IndigoEmployee

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Wonder-ful read With relatable characters in realistic life situations, this book is a hit! I finished this book the same day I picked it up from the library. We all have "things" that make us stick out from the crowd, but this book flips them into strengths that make us unique. A good book about true friends and those who aren't.
Date published: 2017-08-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book This book was a great read, it wasn't written greatly and it was very discriptive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartbreaker It's sort of a heart breaking read, but funny and sweet too. Would be terrific to read aloud with kids. A really nice message. Definitely pick it up and give it a read before the movie comes out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cute! Hopelessly adorable. Had me laughing, crying, yelling, every emotion you could feel was brought out when I was reading this book. Definitely a book for all ages, not just young readers. I even recommended it to my grandma who loved it just as much as I did.
Date published: 2017-08-10
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone Should Read This Book! I recently read this story in preparation to read aloud to a junior class. It is a warm, heartfelt story of love, acceptance, empathy, and understanding. It encourages bravery and courage as the main character faces his fears and uncertainties, and how he overcomes the negative comments and glares of society ignorance and teaches everyone to look beyond what they see. A must read for classrooms, or parent-child shared reading at home. I particularly like the different voices/perspectives that the author has structured the book in. It takes learning about differing points of view to a much deeper level/experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a great message This book has such a great message and students love reading it!
Date published: 2017-07-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! This was a great book, not only in terms of story but also in terms of helping me open my mind. Having POVs from multiple characters demonstrates how everyone has their own truths, and one person's understanding of a situation can be completely different from another's and so it's important not to make assumptions. This feels like a kid friendly way to comprehend the message behind the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why as well.
Date published: 2017-07-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read This book changed my life... period. I will never forget the day it was recommended to me as a classroom teacher for my next read aloud... I can't believe how it changed us... as a class, and how it brought us together as a collective... It truly is the only book I consistently ask staff and students alike if they have read. A must read for any age.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good Good story, middle grade with a touching message. I cried, I laughed, I read it in less than one day.
Date published: 2017-07-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonder-ful The title of this book makes you wonder, what its gonna be, but then once you start reading it, you find its about a boy who goes through surgery and has a facial disorder, as he looks very scary. This book is absolutely, beautifully written as it talks about friends, peers, school, and most importantly, people loving you for who you are. This book talks about acceptance, and belief, and love, and there are some dark and mean things in this book, however it is important to bring awareness to it because, it shows how bullying and tormenting someone who is different and living that life can be difficult. Yet, it shows courage through the main character Auggie and this book will make you cry, because it is so sad!! The ending is beautiful, but it makes you wonder how boys and girls in our real world are going through the same thing and it is truly heart breaking, but so sweet.. After reading this book, you will feel like you know more about things and will try to be more accepting! It truly is a life-changing book. Lots of people read this, and recommend it, and I say that is a good book that really resembles real life, as I went to elementary school and could truly relate to the environment described in the book. I recommend this book for kids! I also recommend it for adults if they would like to read it, but highly recommend it for kids! Soo sad, sweet, and impactful! Thankyou R. J Palacio!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Good! I've had this book for several years, but was never terribly interested in reading it. A couple weeks ago I saw a trailer for the movie coming out in November and decided that I had better read the book because the movie looks pretty moving! Well... the book was excellent. I completely fell in love with Auggie. My heart broke for him and the struggles he faced. I loved the happy, hopeful ending. I was a little surprised to see it was written from a few different points of view. I'm not sure that it was necessary, but did make it interesting to hear certain other characters POV concerning Auggie. Aside from knowing his initial reaction to August, I really don't know why Via's boyfriend had his own POV. Maybe if he had had a bigger role in the story... Anyway, overall a very touching story, appropriate for all ages, which reminds us to be careful with our words and actions, and to look deeper that a person's appearance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book for kids of all ages! This has got to be the best read-aloud book I have ever encountered in my years as a teacher. I read it every year to my class, and those students who I have two years in a row (due to having split grades) always clamor for me to read it again! The book so fully captures the life of Auggie Pullman and the people he is close to and reminds us all to be kind in a way that is heartfelt without being sentimental. I would definitely say this is a must-read for every human being on the planet!

Date published: 2017-05-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great novel to teach compassion This novel is great at teaching compassion and acceptance towards others. It tackles a topic that is hardly talked about, and it educates the reader without being condescending. The only thing I didn't like was that each character's perspective had to start at the beginning of their own story, not where the previous character left off. It made the novel feel very repetitive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED IT! It was hard to put this book down, and it was sad when it ended. You really got to know Auggie and his struggles growing up being different. Althougt written as a childrens book there is a lot of character development, and you really grow to love this little guy who is wise beyond his years. If you have a class, this is a must read... If you are looking for something different, this is also a must read! I would and have recommended this book to many people and encourage all students to read it as it shows the hardships of being bullied, facing bullies and what it is like to be a child which special features and needs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Book for Middle School This book was great in so many ways! I can understand why some people were annoyed by the perfect parents, or the "too happy" ending, but sometimes it's nice to have a happy ending, even if life isn't really like that. I enjoyed that the book was written in the perspective of different characters, not just by the hero, August. I particularly enjoyed the section written by his sister, Via. I think this is a perspective that is all too often overlooked. As much as she loves her brother, it is hard to be the sibling that always has to take second place, even though she understands how silly her feelings may be in comparison to what her brother has had to go through (and still does). This would be a great book for the classroom!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing read! As a teacher I found this incredibly written. The different points of view was well done and very important to help children learn how to empathize with others. The story itself carries multiple powerful messages; don't be afraid to be yourself, never give up on yourself & the effects of bullying. Wonderful read. It is now in many grade 5 classrooms, a good read for children and adults.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Anti-Bullying Book This book is incredible. The book takes turns with first person narration from various points of view - the bullied child, Auggie; his new sort-of-friend; his sister; his sister's boyfriend... and if you get the book with the Julian chapter, the main bully. Great, just great. I really recommend the book with the Julian chapter - probably my favourite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best books I read in 2016 I don't think I have ever seen a negative reviews or rating of this book, so I went in with fairly high expectations, and they were totally met! Wonder was the first book in a long time to keep me up into the wee hours to finish it, and it was completely worth while! For once I actually enjoyed dual first person perspectives and I loved every character, even though they all held some similar characteristics that the author seemed to want in every single character. The premise of the book originally seemed like it was going to be very hard to pull together but the characters were written incredibly well and all fit in just right. I very highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wonder (Wonder #1) Wonder is one of those rare books that makes you want to hug everyone in it so tightly that they’ll have no doubt about how much you love them…and beyond that, it also makes you want to reach out and hug the whole world. It’s an upbeat, humorous, life-affirming story that deserves to be read—and it’s one that may just change its readers, too.If you remember how terrifying it was to be a kid on a day to day basis, you’ll appreciate August’s story. 10-year-old Auggie is going to school for the first time in his life, and he has to navigate new rules, learn to interact with teachers, and figure out how to make new friends. In addition, he also has a severe facial deformity that stops strangers in their tracks, so all the usual perils of the fifth grade take on even more heightened stakes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent read for 8-12 year old to understand empathy Read this with my 9 year olds - I read most out loud and it gave the opportunity to have some excellent discussion about peers that might be different and how to treat friends/others. My take is that it was educational - but the kids really got into the story and characters. A bit of a tear jerker to read at times, but a wonderful bedtime read experience.
