Furthermore, immense placards, posted on the huge columns, held them up conspicuously before the passers-by, and there was in the evening air the excitement of an event. The heavy monument called "L'Academie nationale de Musique," crouching under the black sky, exhibited to the public gathered in front of it a pompous and whitish facade while the marble colonnade of its gallery was illuminated like a stage scene by invisible electric lights. Upon the square the mounted Republican Guards directed the traffic, and innumerable carriages arrived from all quarters of Paris, giving glimpses of creamy light stuffs and pale heads behind the lowered windows. The coupts and landaus followed in a line under the reserved arcades, and, stopping for a moment, would discharge fashionable and other women, in their evening pelisses, trimmed with furs, feathers, and priceless laces--precious bodies, divinely adorned. All the way up the famous stairway there was a fairy-like ascent, an uninterrupted mounting of ladies arrayed like queens, whose throats and ears were ablaze with flashing jewels, and whose long trains swept the steps. The auditorium was filling early, for no one wished to lose a note from the two illustrious artists; and throughout the vast amphitheater, under the resplendent electric light falling from the chandelier, the surging crowd were finding their seats amid the loud clamor of voices.
