In her now classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon told the story of Claire Randall, an English ex-combat nurse who walks through a stone circle in the Scottish Highlands in 1946, and disappears . . . into 1743. The story unfolded from there in seven bestselling novels, and CNN has called it “a grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across [centuries].” Now the story continues in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.

1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington’s troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife, his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is, and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie’s wife, Claire, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in twentieth-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is  searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family’s secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy . . . never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood is the brilliant next chapter in a masterpiece of the imagination unlike any other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always incredible I love Diana Gabaldon. I really wish she would adopt me as a writing mentor, but let's face it, she's a busy lady. If you've followed her from the beginning this isn't going to let you down! Even if it has its moments of meandering through one storyline or another, who cares? Anyone as addicted and in love with this saga won't be bothered by thirty more instalments of Outlander when Jamie and Claire are so old no one even wants to think about them having sex. Just enjoy the ride--there's thankfully at least one more book to this series. She actually could have probably wrapped it up with this one but again, why? I'm just glad to have these to look forward to starting again when she's finished.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely worth the wait I made myself re-read An Echo in the Bone before I allowed myself to read this even though it was sitting, taunting me in my Kobo. It hooked me right from the start (as all of Herself's books do and I found myself walking around reading it because I refused to put it down at certain parts (no spoilers). When my cat woke me up in the middle of the night, the first thing I did was grab for this - "just a little more" I would tell myself - next thing the sun is coming up. I enjoyed how Jamie and Claire are so realistically getting older but still enjoying each other and mellowing just a little bit. I do hope this is not the end...............there has to be more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it Excellent read of the whole series. The ending had me in tears. There were times when the battle scenes took a while to unfold and story upon story, twist upon twist it was hard at times keeping the characters straight buy you grow to know them and love them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Written in My Own Heart's Blood This was really well written and gripping from the first page to the last. It is another wortby addition to the fascinating Outlander saga. The only bad thing is having to wait for the next book to come out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outlander Series This is one of the best books (series) I have read to date. Throughout the series for the most part I did not want to stop reading, I had to find out what was happening to Jamie and Clair! I did find a few spots repetitive (where she stopped to describe something from a previous book). I loved the way Dianne ended the series! But it would have been nice to have an end for William as well. Loved this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved all the books written by Diana. Being born and bred in Bonnie Scotland, and have only found out about the Outlander series of books last year before the TV series. I went out and bought all 7 books to read and could not put them down. Just lately I purchased the 8th book and found that as much as I enjoyed it too, maybe it's time to end the story. Claire and Jamie are not getting any younger and I would like to see them both come thru the stones and live out their lives in the highlands of Scotland in peace and quiet. Many of the places which Diane talks about I have been there as I am originally from Forfar which is in the County of Angus. One thing she talked about were Forfar bridies which is a meat pie and something I like to have when I go back home for a visit which I am doing this June. I am also enjoying the second series on TV right now and have started to read the books again as I think I read them a little too fast the first time around. I think because of the Scottish and Gaelic sayings it might be hard for some readers to understand. I just wish she had explained a lot of the Gaelic words at the end of the books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never Disappointed Yet another fantastic book in the Outlander series! Can't wait for the tail to continue! I might have to re read the series again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Written in my own hearts blood Excellent read. Diana has outdone her skill for storytelling in this book. She richly weaves together the past present and future to keep the reader engaged with the characters and storylines. She makes us care about them and vividly brings to life the times the characters find themselves in. Highly recommend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read I absolutely love this series, the author has woven a tale through the ages. The first book in the series still remains my favorite but this one did not disappoint, I personally could not put it down and read it in 2 days. The only reason this book does not rate 5 stars in my opinion is that I found the ending rather abrupt, it felt like there was a great gap of time that was missing and unaccounted for, I can only hope that means she will be releasing another book in the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Written In My Own Hearts Blood *I loved this book, just as I loved all of Diana Gabaldon's books. I own the series and have read all of them twice and am now watching the series on TV and can't wait for the next series to start. I hope she brings us more in the lives of Claire, Jaimie, etc. I still have more of the Lord John books to acquire and read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Final Curtain on this Saga? Being a big fan of Diana's book series of Jamie & Claire since Outlander in the 90's my interest in the time travel Scottish saga got rekindled last summer 2014 when Outlander came out on TV via STAR Network. I found myself taken back in time again throughout all the highs & lows, triumphs and tragedies reading through Book One to Eight. What I love about these books is the diversity; history, graphic details and romance of course intertwined with many unexpected twists and turns. While reading I can actually imagine myself there and what life was like in the 1700's. Book 8 -- Written in My Own Hearts Blood - had a lot of loose ends to tie up, flipping back and forth in future/past and also many characters involved which I admit got a bit confusing at times and I wondered if someone who may not have read the other books would get the full benefit of this one. I had mixed feelings while reading mostly since I felt this may be the last of the series and I was a bit sad & attached to the characters and storyline. To Outlander fans I say go for it. For newbies to the series I would say you might want to read all 8. ( I found with these books you may want to re-read several times.) "Dinna Fash Sassenach". En-JOY.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Written In My Own Hearts Blood After 20 Years I truly have enjoyed all of Diana's books. It does get a little tiresome as her books are over the top descriptive and not to the taste of many who think it's a waste of words let's cut to the chase type of reader. However after 20 years I think it is time to put this story to rest. It's endless some of us won't live long enough to read more as Diana is fairly young. Jamie and Claire are wonderful but enough already. I got to the end of this book but prior to that I could see this story was no where near ending. It's Time!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from haven't finished reading yet--sorry anxious to read--just into it but so far I would say it's a 4 star.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Soap Opera Style I was very dissappointed and was hoping for some sort of story. This book is bits and pieces of all the characters and refers to the past over and over. Their was no story just bits and pieces of everyones life. Because I have been following from the start I read it but was bored most of the time and couldn't wait to finish this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! This 8th book in the Outlander series was well worth the wait. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. All of the characters we grew to adore over the series, and some new ones, factor into this wonderful read. This is not a stand alone book. You will do yourself a disservice if you do anything other than start from the beginning in book 1. There are less pages devoted to Jamie/Claire in this book than I might have liked - but frankly, every page could be about Jamie/Claire and I still wouldn't have enough! Jamie really is the greatest book boyfriend ever written. While I never want this series to end, I was happily sated by the conclusion. If it is over (I'm not aware that any sequel has been confirmed), I think lovers of this series will be verra pleased indeed. A series to be savoured and highly recommended!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from More of the same I was looking forward to the book but was disappointed in it. Too much of the same themes as her other books. Some good plot twists but nothing really new. I call this the never ending story because it is written with no intention to ever wrap it all up. Parts that need some closure are not near happening yet. For those who love Outlander series, it's part of the saga, but as a stand alone book it doesn't work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great summer read I heard Diana speak at the book signing about how she started writing this whole series. I had the opportunity ti speak with her as well. I'm taking my time reading it and thoroughly loving getting to know all the characters again. Can hardly wait for the tv series to begin. Will have to start reading them all over again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Written In My Own Heart's Blood I preordered this book, one of the 8 the the series and I have them all, in Mar and received the 7 chapter free preview shortly after. In the meantime I retread the previous book "An Echo In The Bone" to refamiliarize myself with the characters. I receive my book on June 11 and am already half way through it, reading it slowly. It could be another 5 years for the next one, my only upset is that I couldn't stand in line for hours to have Diana to autograph it personally. Can't wait for the TV Series to start in August! Starting with the "Outlander" on Showcase in Canada. The new book is everything you expect from Diana and more. When I finish the new book I'm going to start reading them all over again, from the first through until I'm rereading the latest again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from :( Not too happy that indigo decided to give a sneak preview to people who pre-ordered this book recently. I ordered it months ago, had I known that I would be able to get a preview of it, I would've waited. But I am still excited for this book!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not too happy I ordered this for my sister's birthday tomorrow and because it's a gift certificate I won't be able to give her the preview. Disappointed that she will have to wait. I understand that she might buy something else as it's a gift certificate but she won't. She's been waiting for this sequel for years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED the freebie first 7 Chapters As a result of pre-ordering this book, I was sent a paperback leaflet of the first 7 chapters to "tie me over" to the release date. Of course, it took me about 45 minutes to read said leaflet, so I'm left hankering for June 10th worse than ever before... Tom Petty has it right: the waiting is the hardest part!

Editorial Reviews

“Suffice to say that Gabaldon's writing moves at a missile pace. . . . What is not in doubt is the panache with which her stories unfold, nor the vivacity of her characters and her skill at setting a scene.” —The Herald (Scotland) “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, the eighth volume in what Gabaldon promises is a nine-book series, continues the epic saga of Claire and Jamie Fraser, time-crossed lovers, who for the past seven novels have been ricocheting between his world in the 18th century and hers in the 20th. . . . Despite the millions of words Gabaldon’s written for the past 20 years about Claire, Jamie, the ancestors, and the descendants they encounter during their time travels . . .  it all boils down to telling a simple, age-old tale—a story about two people involved in a long-term relationship, in love and married for 50 years, give or take that two-century travel time.”—Publishers Weekly  “You’ll find yourself sucked back into Jamie and Claire’s story without even a second of hesitation. . . . All I have to say is to jump in. It’s a fun ride.” —Book Reporter  “What Gabaldon is is an author who found a formula that takes myriad genres—historical fiction, adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and romance—and blends them into one (well, eight) hard-to-resist novels. . . . [Her] latest . . . [weaves] eight separate storylines into one novel. . . .  It’s little wonder why for years producers have been salivating over the idea of translating Outlander to the big (or small) screen.” —National Post“Gabaldon's appeal is timeless.” —NPR“Gabaldon again pushes the boundaries of genre fiction. . . . a dash of juvenile fantasy, a jigger of historical fact and heaping helpings of counterfactuals.” —Kirkus Reviews
