Wells feels quite defeated, he's writing about how people who don't question or look beyond themselves are dooming everyone. But he tries to write in a very straightforward way, without a lot of digressions into his philosophy. There were quite a lot of interesting things in this book. The characters in the book aren't particularly likeable and there's not a great deal of plot, it's all an expression of what's wrong with humanity. How they need to grow and become more if they are going to survive the wars of the twentieth century. Unlike a lot of other books by him where he has all the ideas about how to fix things, here it's just what is going wrong.
