North & South is rated 5 out of 5 by 9.
North and South is a powerful adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's feisty and passionate love story, set across the social divides in the changing world of Victorian industrial society. Margaret Hale is one of literature's most original heroines: a southerner from a country vicarage newly settled in the industrial northern town of Milton. In the shock of her move, she misjudges charismatic cotton mill-owner John Thornton, whose strength of purpose and passion are a match for her own pride and wilfulness. When the workers of Milton call a strike, Margaret takes their side, and the two are brought into deeper conflict. As events spiral out of control, Margaret - to her surprise - begins to fall in love with Thornton...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent choice! We loved North and South. We tried to watch it all in one evening but couldn't, darn work gets in the way! We love Mr. Thornton and I can't picture anyone else playing him. I am glad I never had to live in the industrial revolution, it wasn't a good time to be a human being. But this story ends nicely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, Fantastic I have always loved Pride and Prejudice for Jane Austen but when I watched North and South I fell in love with it and I can tell you that it really touched me in a way that no other novel did before. The hero "Richard Armitage will take your breath away because of his handsomness and his elegance that really represented the charachters in that era of time. The music , the scenes and everything in this tv movie will transfer you in a delightful way to the Victorian time. If you are a jane Austen's lover then deffinately you will love this great romance story

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful This was a completely absorbing story. The character portrayal was convincing and the gritty Mill Town setting of the North was very realistic. I am a Jane Austin fan who loved the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. This mini-series was just as good--romantic but multi-layered rather than merely sentimental.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A stunningly beautiful series! I've long heard about this British television series and finally ordered it for myself. What followed was one of the finest times I've spent watching the TV. This is a wonderful adaptation. It tells the story of two people, John Thornton and Margaret Hale, who overcome prejudices and learn the world is more than they thought. John Thornton is a mill owner from the northern town of Milton. Margaret Hale is a parsons daughter from the southern town of Helston. When Margaret and her family first move to Milton, she is horrified by what she sees. She is appalled by the rough ways of John Thornton. But over time, she comes to see he is an honourable man who truly cares about the people he has working for him. John Thornton is a man who has risen out of the ashes of what his father did to the family and is a man of integrity and honour. He is immediately drawn to Margaret though he feels he is not worthy of her affections. The casting in this series is brilliant; the barely contained passion portrayed by the oh so handsome Richard Armitage and the ethereal innocent beauty of Margaret played by Daniela Denby-Ashe. Sinead Cusak as John's very protective mother and Brendan Coyle as the honourable union leader Higgins - each brings a richness to this production. Also of note is the fascinating clashes between rich and poor; between the mill owners and the people who work for them. The scenery itself, from the hauntingly beautiful but deadly mill, to the idyllic countryside of Helston becomes an important backdrop to this romantic tale of two people who fall in love. I can not recommend this series highly enough and I've already watched it numerous times myself. Each time has been a treat and I've grown to love it even more with each viewing of this incredibly romantic tale.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyed Thoroughly I borrowed this movie from the local library and was not expecting the great entertainment that I received. I am a huge fan of BBC's version of Pride and Prejudice and was equally entertained by North & South. The industrial revolution storyline kept me surprisingly interested, the romance was intense yet pure, the music was wonderful...I watched it until 2am this morning and can't wait to see it again! I'm looking forward to reading the book, although I know that I might prefer the movie more, since I saw it first. The actors were well-chosen even though I am not familiar with them or their prior work. I liked it so much that I think I'll add it to my collection. I would recommend this movie for any drama and romance fan! Mr. Thornton and Mr. Darcy...Be still my beating heart!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from North and South (BBC Drama's version) Once again, the BBC has triumphed in a drama presentation. TVOntario recently broadcast this drama over 4 days, and the cast was excellent, particularly Richard Armitage as John Thornton. I have not read the book by Elizabeth Gaskell but am looking forward to doing so. As a woman, I was left to literally swoon over the romantic story and the wonderful cast, locations and soundtrack. It was voted the Best Drama for 2004 by BBC viewers and for further reviews one has only to click on to the BBC's website to read more enthusiastic reviews. Coming from Scotland, I was pleased to read that Edinburgh was used as a location and although much of the scenery is dark ( satanic mills ) the acting and romance more than made up for the darkness. I just wish Chapters could rush my order for the book through quickly! The series was a swoonfest as one person wrote.
