Andrei Tarkovsky philosophical science-fiction film, that looks at human desires and needs in an outer space setting.
The planet Solaris is a mystery of swirling seas and thick clouds. Yet beneath its sky canopy, the planet is a sentient being, affecting all humans who come into contact with its atmosphere. A nearby space station, placed in Solaris's orbit, has fallen under its influence, with the crew suffering from visions and delusions. One cosmonaut wants to explore and understand Solaris's power -- but can he do so without placing himself in mortal danger?
A scientist travels to the mysterious planet Solaris in order to discover what caused the failure of an earlier mission. When his long-dead wife appears on the space station, he realizes that the planet has the power to perceive human desires and grant them. The classic novel by Stanislav Lem provides interesting fodder for Tarkvosky's atmospheric formalism.
