Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant! So what happens when you have a comedy that fails to play by the rules, add rapid fire dialogue that is as well written as it is spoken, and adds in a touch of the creative genius of Aaron Sorkin? You have a show that was so far ahead of its time, that ABC had no choice but to cancel it after two seasons because it was just too good for TV! SEASON ONE Without a shadow of a doubt, easily one of the best first seasons ever created. Characters fully formed, relationships fell quickly into place, and the humour was so fast and furious that at times it was difficult to keep up. Heavy handed topics were definitely in play, and the show was such that there were many times the ending wasn't the outcome expected. In other words, this isn't your standard sitcom where everything ties up neatly in a nice little bow at the end... SEASON TWO While still at the quality of Season One, the second season played even looser with the rules, and toned down the humour in favour of more tension. The laughs are still there (and never forced) but they are definitely more in tune with the somber tone of the season. After all, not only was Sorkin off creating The West Wing at the time (and writing both shows by himself), but it was also a tense set because no one knew if the show was going to be picked up for a third season. As a result, the shows acting took on that tension (and added to their performances), but the direction of the show also took it into effect. In other words, all that was happening behind the scenes (in real life) was directly impacting the storyline of the show itself... SPECIAL FEATURES Considering that this is an almost forgotten show from 1998, the extras included are pretty good! Not only do you have two specials that look back at the show (one with the cast, the other with Sorkin and Schlamme), but you also have one that compares the fictional setup of Sports Night to its real life counterpart ESPN's SportsCenter. Add two gag reels (including one never before seen, outside of those from the show) and a look at the technical innovations of the series; and you have a series of extras that will most definitely be watched more then once...
