This film adaptation of Henry James' classic novel follows the trials and tribulations of Isabel Archer, a fiercely independent American living in 1870s Europe. At first, the 23-year-old Isabel shuns marriage, in favor of experiencing all that life has to offer. But eventually Isabel marries domineering Gilbert Osmond -- whose manipulations nearly destroy Isabel's life and spirit. Her only hope is to escape from Osmond, before it's too late.... A beautiful, independent young woman with an unquenchable thirst for worldly experience rejects an advantageous marriage proposal, only to fall prey to the devious ministrations of a scheming friend who arranges her betrothal to an utter scoundrel.
