A light-hearted caper about two con-men who swindle a powerful racketeer in 1930s Chicago. Johnny Hooker is a young confidence man whose mentor is murdered when they run afoul of syndicate head Doyle Lonnegan. Seeking revenge, as well as a career boost, Hooker joins forces with old pro Henry Gondorff. Together the two scam artists cook up and carry out a complicated gambling sting, which nets them and their colleagues over a million dollars.
Set in 1936, a masterful group of con artists arrange an epic "Sting" operation to pay back a big Chicago gangster for the murder of a smalltime grifter. Shaw as the mark is formidable. Marvin Hamlisch's score of Scott Joplin tunes created a revival of ragtime music. Academy Award Nominations: 10, including Best Actor--Robert Redford. Academy Awards: 7, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best (Adapted) Screenplay.
