Featured Picks

Exit West

by Mohsin Hamid

Exit West is the remarkably prescient story about two young refugees who fall in love and attempt to flee their war-torn home country. Author Mohsin Hamid takes us on a journey that is magical, frightening and hopeful – making it impossible to tear yourself away. It will without doubt have you examining our world with fresh eyes. This is a masterpiece that is my early pick for the best fiction of the year.”

The Stranger in the Woods

by Michael Finkel

The Stranger in the Woods in nothing short of extraordinary. This is the true story of a young man who took himself into the woods and lived there without seeing or talking to anyone for 27 years. The things he does to survive and the events that unfold which eventually result in his arrest make this a true page-turner. Beautifully written by memoirist and journalist Michael Finkel, I started reading this early one evening and read right through until I finished. It made me think, it touched my heart. In the end... it made me cry. It is at once poignantly intimate and entirely existential. If you loved Jon Kraukauer's Into Thin Air, or are looking for your next great book club pick this is it.”

The Break

by Katherena Vermette

“I already have my favourite amongst the CBC Canada Reads shortlist. The Break is a deeply moving intergenerational saga, kicked off when a young Metis woman witnesses, at night through her darkened window, what she believes is a rape. Through the interweaving stories of several people connected to the victim the ‘truth’ of what happened reveals itself, as do the deeper truths of the community. The writing is fresh, forceful and powerful, and it drew me in from the first paragraph.”

by Suze Yalof Schwartz with Debra Goldstein

“This is the introduction to meditation that I’ve been waiting for. Suze Yalof Schwartz, the founder of Unplug Meditation, the world’s first drop-in meditation studio, strips away so much of what makes meditation inaccessible and focuses on the essentials of this truly life-changing and enhancing practice. Unplug is part Suze’s autobiography – how her unplanned move from high-powered fashion stylist in New York to L.A. led her to becoming a meditation entrepreneur – and part exploration and explanation of how just 20 minutes a day of meditation can boost brain power as well as our overall sense of well-being. Unplug has actually changed my life. This book is truly a treat for the soul.”

Strong is the New Pretty

by Kate T. Parker

“I fell in love with this book the moment it was placed in my hands. Created to inspire young girls to live their passion and believe in themselves, this beautifully photographed book is a celebration of girls being themselves. A perfect gift for any girl 7 to 13.”
