10 Awesome Indoor and Outdoor Winter Activities for Kids

Keep your kids entertained over the holidays with these fun family activities that celebrate all the season has to offer.

After months spent at home, it’s no surprise that many of us are running out of ideas to keep playtime fresh. Because of physical distancing protocols, many of our go-to activities are off limits, putting the pressure on parents to supercharge the fun factor for their kids. The good news: simple activities, whether inside or outside, pay off big. And among the most important are outdoor adventures, says Hartley Banack, an outdoor education lecturer in the faculty of education, at University of British Columbia. “Kids’ connections to other creatures, to places, to water, to sky, to rock—all of that happens by being outdoors.” Get inspired with our top 10 winter activities for kids.

1. Go on a winter scavenger hunt

Turn a family walk into a scavenger hunt by drawing up a list of seasonal sightings, or take the easy route and print off a templated version. Make sure natural wonders are included, such as icicles, an evergreen tree, animal prints, and birds. (Bonus points for Frosty the Snowman.)

2. Plan a family game night

Having a good stash of family-friendly board games will score major points with your kids. To make it extra special, incorporate themed nights, such as wearing holiday PJs or costumes. And don’t forget the snacks.

3. Read classic holiday books together—in a pillow fort

Nothing transforms your everyday environment into a magical place like a pillow fort. And reading holiday favourites and classics underneath cozy blankets, with a flashlight, makes it all the more special and memorable.

4. Go skating on an outdoor rink

Get bundled up with the kiddos and lace up your skates. But whatever you do, don’t forget the post-skate hot cocoa with extra marshmallows, please.

5. Try a fun, easy craft as a family

Bring on the creative inspo with a craft kit—the kids will indulge their artistic side for hours. There’s a theme for every personality and occasion, from holiday motifs to jewellery making to dinosaur creation, and more. (Bonus: Finished products make excellent gifts for family and friends.)

6. Collect greenery outdoors for holiday decor

Go on a family hike to gather natural elements to hygge your home, such as twigs, greenery, pinecones, and more. Then, have fun adding them to the mantel, turning evergreen bunches into a wreath, and brushing glittery paint on pinecones for a table centrepiece.

7. Play in the snow

Don’t let the cold temperatures dampen the joy of the outdoors. Remember your favourite pastimes as a kid—snow angels, forts, snowmen, snowball fights, sledding. Now amp up the fun with snow tubes, snow art kits, and snow blasters. Just make sure to bundle up with cozy hats and mitts.

8. Put on a puppet show to act out a favourite story

Let your kids take the driver’s seat in story creation and put on a real puppet show, complete with a puppet theatre made of repurposed carboard boxes. Create popsicle stick characters or sock puppets, or use your favourite stuffed animals. Don’t forget to keep the audience comfortable with soft seats and plenty of popcorn.

9. Make a bird feeder and try bird watching

There are hundreds of different ways to DIY a bird feeder—make pretty ornaments to hang on trees, coat a toilet paper roll with seeds, and repurpose old plastic bottles as seed vessels. Whichever you choose, it’ll be an activity that’s got legs as you refill the birdseed and identify new friends and repeat visitors—cardinals, blue jays, and more. Take it a step further with a kid-friendly bird watching book, or have your little ones report their sightings with artistic renditions of the day’s favourite flocks.

10. Bake together with fun cookie cutters and toppings

Convert your kitchen into a kid-friendly bakery with cookie cutters, icing, and sprinkles, and let your little bakers get to work. For maximum family fun, host a gingerbread house decorating competition—winner gets to crack off the first piece.
