If the more than three million hashtags on Instagram are any indication,
art
journaling is having a moment.
Just like with a traditional written journal, art journaling is a way to express and explore your thoughts,
feelings, and ideas using a variety of creative media—including paints, collage, washi tape, and, of course,
words.
While a quick scroll through #artjournaling reveals pages upon pages of gallery-worthy journal spreads, art
therapist Or Har-Gil
stresses it’s is not about
esthetics—even if you’ve never held a paintbrush, you don’t
need to worry about creating something beautiful. “It’s not goal-directed, the whole point is for your own
self-care, for your own wellness,” she says. And creative activities can help decrease stress, according to
a study from Drexel University. It found that 45
minutes of art making reduced the stress hormone cortisol
in three-quarters of the subjects. If you’re looking for a relaxing, new creative outlet, here’s how to
start art journaling.
