Rated 3 out of 5 by from fun puzzle, but.... If the pieces aren't put back in when it's put away, it will make the animal sounds randomly! It's cute, but the child has to remember to wait a bit before putting each piece in or they won't sound. The kids seem to really like it anyway

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok It's OK, but the sounds are a bit annoying and sometimes the animals make sound without being played with. Strange!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun for my preschoolers! This is my second Zoo puzzle. The animal sounds seem distorted in this puzzle compared to the one I used 3 years ago. My preschool students love all my Sound Puzzles!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little loud My son was very excited to get this puzzle. He had already worked through the toddler puzzles an needed a bit of a challenge. This puzzle is perfect for those who need a few more pieces to increase difficulty. The problem arose when he solved the first piece, the lion. The sound of each animal is quite loud and frightened my son to the point of tears. We kept the puzzle and he does interact and look at it but refuses to 'solve' the puzzle himself due to the loudness. Ours looks a bit different from the one above so perhaps we have an older version. On the whole I would recommend it but be forewarned about the loudness.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good for a very young toddler Love the sounds that the animals make and makes my toddler more interested in playing and figuring out the puzzle. The only thing I don't like is that because it's either light or motion sensitive, a lion or crocodile "mysteriously" yells out if one of the pieces isn't put back. It has scared both myself and my little one a couple of times as we've been upstairs and we hear a lion roaring down in the basement LOL Another thing that wasn't great is that if you place any animal piece over another animal it will make the sound, which doesn't really teach a child anything I also find that this type of puzzle will be way too juvenile for a child older than 2.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This puzzle is possessed! Great idea BUT it played on its own even without putting the puzzle pieces in. Had to take out the batteries to stop it. I had no idea that it was light activated but it played randomly BY ITSELF in AND out of the light @ night in the dark!. It would also play whenever someone moved it or walked by it. I(t is now in the trash.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Two Puzzles, One that works. Because our Christmas has been delayed due to illness, I just opened the puzzles today, put batteries in, and checked them out. In the Musical Instruments Puzzle the zylophone piece does not work. I need to contact you about getting my money back, or you sending me a new working puzzle. I also bought Sing Along Nursery Rhymes Puzzle which is working fine. However the two puzzles - which look very similar work differently This could be confusing for a two year old. The musical instrument puzzle sounds after you take out, THEN REPLACE, the piece. For the Nursey Rhymes, the song starts immediately when you take out the piece.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great introduction to puzzles We loved the sound puzzles; they are a great way to get kids interested in puzzles. And the quality is great. Only issue is that if you don't put the pieces back in, then it sometimes make the noise on its own (usually at 2am)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Okay puzzle Makes great fun sounds but very sensitive. Make sure all the pieces are back in the puzzle before turning off lights or the whole thing starts going off. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Scared the living daylights out of hubby I received this toy as a gift from my daughter's grandparents. Hubby did not know the whole "light activated" thing and I just didn't read the "instructions". First time it startled me then I figured it out. Hubby did not know about the toy and. Last night after he turned the lights off it started playing. Talk about a possessed toy. Anyway, my daughter has little interest in it and the instruments don't sound like the original. Also, if you place the harmonica where the piano is suppose to go it still places. Pretty pointless toy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from sound puzzle - musical instruments I bought this puzzle for my 2 year old. The concept behind the puzzle is good. However, if you are buying this puzzle to help a child learn the sounds of different instruments, the puzzle can be confusing for a young child. We discovered that if you put the wrong instrument piece over the opening (e.g., put the piano piece over the opening for the drum), it still plays that instrument. This design flaw needs to be corrected.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wiorthless! I purchased this puzzle as a gift for my granddaughter's 2nd birthday. Inserted brand new batteries, did not work. Tried another set of batteries...still did not work. Exchanged it for another of the same and it does not work, either. I also see that in very small print on reverse side, it says "light-activated, use in bright light", which I think is ridiculous but even after trying that, there is still no sound!!! Sooo, another trip to store -- this time for full refund!!! And BTW, I do believe that most Melissa & Doug products are overrated & overpriced!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun Play Time My grandson and granddaughter have enjoyed this puzzle. Not only is it good coordination practice in placing the pieces but we've played with each piece individually to create our own 'band'. I would buy it again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not so smart These are my biggest complaints about this toy: - all instruments play the same segment of the same song (intro to Old McDonald) - all pieces trigger all instruments (ie: if you hover the harmonica puzzle piece above the piano slot, it triggers the piano song to play) it would be much better if ONLY the instrument you're holding triggers the slot it goes into - if a puzzle piece is not in place, it is triggered by lights being turned off in the room or by a large vibration (door slamming)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing Sometimes the animals make sounds when we put the pieces into the puzzle, but more often than not, they do not. It's still a cute puzzle, just disappointing. I expected more out of the quality.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Same tune is played by all instruments. I wish the instruments played different tunes. It gets really old hearing the same line ("Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O") a hundred times a day. Wish I had bought a different sound puzzle (like the farm animal puzzle).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not what I expected I hoped this puzzle would be a great learning tool for my toddler. Alas, most sounds bear NO resemblance to what the real instuments sound like. I have removed the batteries!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It makes sound on its own We bought this puzzle this weekend, and I don't know how, but every time we turn off the lamp in the living room (which is the room's only source of light, so it always has to be on), the puzzle makes sound. I think it's the zebras. It is very freaky. We keep the puzzle and its pieces completely separate from each other at night when we aren't using the puzzle (puzzle on the table, pieces on the floor or chair) and every single day and night when we turn the lamp off, the puzzle makes noise at us. It has frightened us on more than one occasion. Now I know to expect it. How is this happening? I would like to return this puzzle to the store if they will accept it and get a non-sound puzzle. Also, the puzzle makes sound when you bring the pieces close to their spots, they don't even have to be inside the puzzle exactly. My daughter cannot get the pieces in since she is only 19 months old, but she makes the puzzle roar and squwak plenty while moving the pieces around on the board near to where they are supposed to fit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Disappointed! I expected the instruments to actually sound like those instruments!!! The drum and the xylophone were the only ones that sounded good. The rest are just different tones of the same sound. I wanted my granddaughter to learn from this, but that won't be happening.
Date published: 2013-02-04
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Bit Disappointing The puzzle is fun and my son loves all the animal noises but...when you hold the Elephant over the spot for the Lion (or any other animal) it makes the Lion sound (or the parrot or alligator or monkey etc). So it is not really teaching the kids proper sounds and it makes nosies even when the pieces are not back in the "correct" places.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Huge disappointment I bought this puzzle for my granddaughter who is nearly two. After we scrounged around for AAA batteries (they are not included), she tried it out. The puzzle claims to make the sounds of the different instruments depicted. Not so! The little electronic sounds do not even slightly resemble the actual sounds of the instruments depicted. If you are considering purchasing this puzzle as a learning device, don't waste your money! If you just want another toy that makes annoying sounds, this is for you.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing The puzzle that I purchased has a different appearance but it is the same 8 instruments. I was very disappointed in the instrument sounds. Not accurate at all. Very electronic keyboard sounding. I would not recomment this puzzle.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work I was traveling to visit my granddaughter in another state. We stopped at a mall on the way and I saw this puzzle. Over the years I have purchased MANY Melissa and Doug products so I had no concerns about the quality. The puzzle was shrink wrapped in plastic so I did not try it out in the store ... but, why would one need to try out a Melissa & Doug product? I paid cash, and the following day when we arrived at my grandchild's house, I was excited to give her the new puzzle. Sadly, it did not work. We checked/changed batteries ... I mean there were four adults in the room with many degrees ... it did not work. I lost the receipt ... but, I wouldn't be back in the city where i purchased it anyway. I phoned the company (Melissa & Doug) and told the story. They NEVER responded. I was willing to discuss ways to return the puzzle, but, with no reply from M & D, the puzzle just became another wood puzzle. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in Melissa and Doug.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A good idea, but, oh dear!! half the time the sounds don't work. Other times half of it works / the wrong sounds come out. Just occasionally... success!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My 2 year old loves this... My 2 year old daughter loves this puzzle. She knows the names of all the animals on the puzzle. I plan to buy more of these puzzles for her. The only con is that my daughter chews on some of the pieces, but that is an issue with my child, not the puzzle, hence the 5 star rating :).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it! This game provided lots of continous use, the kids loved it. The only issue is that it often continued to play sounds on it's own during humid days or middle of the night.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sounds aren't true to the instrument. I have purchased other Melissa and Doug sound puzzles that had quality, true sounds. I was looking forward to the same with the instrument puzzle. Unfortunately, the sounds were not true to the instrument. Puzzle quality is great and my grandchildren can still match the pieces but I wanted it to help them learn the sounds, too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Worth Buying Bought this for our grandchildren. Certainly glad we decided to put batteries in it and try before giving to them. The sounds do not work consistently and are very unrealistic. Will be returning to the store we bought it from tomorrow. A definite "do not buy"!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't last very long Everything in the puzzle "plays" except the violin. It only lasted about 2-3 minutes from the time the package was opened until it stopped playing. Every other instrument "plays" the song. Just a problem with the one violin. It is going back to the store today and hopefully will be refunded.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped working after only 2 days I have to give this a very bad review because after just two days the puzzle broke. Either the noise that is made is from the wrong animal or no sound sounds at all. I would not recommend this toy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cute to look at but not to listen to I have lots of Melissa & Doug toys/puzzles and was disappointed in this one. Most of the noises sound nothing like each piece's instrument (with the exception of the drum set and maybe the xylophone). They all play the same song, too, it would have been nice if they played different tunes for a little bit of variety. Not their best effort.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No sound...not happy My son received this product as as gift for his second birthday. He was very excited about it (he really likes puzzles, and instruments) and we opened it right away. After putting in the AAA batteries, we were all pumped to hear the puzzle come to life. Nothing, except one tweet from the xylophone. We tried cleaning all the contact points, pushing down hard to ensure the contact points connected, and nothing....I hope this is a fluke, as I admire the company and hope they can make things right.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unrealistic sounds I planned to use this in our homeschool. I was disappointed in the sound quality. All the instruments pretty much sound the same. My son likes the puzzle part.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointing I was very excited about this puzzle, but extremely disappointed when we started playing with it! Almost all the instruments sound the same, and they aren't very realistic...not to mention they all play the same song! So far, we've only had it a week, and we've already had to take the batteries out because it goes off in the middle of the night on its own...wish it had an off switch. It doesn't seem to play the music when the correct piece is put in the right spot, just kinda whenever it wants to..:(

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Seriously needs an off switch Generally a fun toy - our 22 month old likes the sounds and placing the animals in their place. From a parent perspective - it needs an off switch. Turning on (or turning off) a light sets off the sounds - not good when you have just put your little one to bed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cute idea but a dud I bought this as a gift for my daughter to introduce her to musical instruments. She loves playing with it, but there are several problems with it. One the sound quality is poor so it is hard to understand the sounds each instrument is making. Then then sound bites between the violin and the trumpet have been switched. Finally, the harmonica does not work at all. I was a cheap purchase, so I am not that disappointed-that is why it got three stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from think twice It looked great in the store, couldnt test it because of course no batteries. My son opened at Christmas, put new batteries in it and it doesnt work like it should. GREAT GIFT i dont think so

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what we expected Both my husband and I were excited about this product. We are a very musical family and thought this puzzle was a great way to introduce new instruments to our son (14 months old). The sounds the instruments make all sound the same. The harmonica and piano are almost identical! Not an ideal representation of the instruments sounds. Disapointed parents but our son still likes to take the pieces out and dance to the music.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun but a little annoying I was very excited to buy this puzzle and give it to my 18 mo old. I love the idea of the puzzle, but this particular one with the instruments is a bit annoying. It would be nice if each instrument played a different tune. The other problem, is that it goes off randomly by itself. Our play room used to be in a basement and when I would turn the lights out and head upstairs the puzzle would go off, it scared me the first few times. My son loves it, even though it tends to drive my husband and I nuts.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Bother I and my family are big fans of Melissa and Doug toys; however, I was completely disappointed in this one. The instruments pretty much all sound alike, with the exception of the xylophone and maybe one other. Your child will NOT learn how instruments sound via this game. Any instrument makes any one of the sounds - they don't have to be placed in their respective places to sound off the right sound. Furthermore, if one of the instruments is held, say, 2 feet away from the puzzle, the sound goes off. It's hard to say which one, considering they all sound alike. Last, but not least, the constant refrain of "Old MacDonald" is extremely annoying. Couldn't they at least have used a different tune for the different instruments? Bottom line: Not recommended, needs lots of work.
