+ what is playability?
You are a monarch, like your parents before you, a ruler of a small pleasant kingdom of rivers and evergreens. Unlike your parents, however, you have hopes and dreams! You want a bigger and more pleasant kingdom, with more rivers and a wider variety of trees. You want a Dominion! In all directions lie fiefs, freeholds, and feodums. All are small bits of land, controlled by petty lords and verging on anarchy. You will bring civilization to these people, uniting them under your banner. But wait! It must be something in the air; several other monarchs have had the exact same idea. You must race to get as much of the unclaimed land as possible, fending them off along the way. To do this you will hire minions, construct buildings, spruce up your castle, and fill the coffers of your treasury. Your parents wouldn’t be proud, but your grandparents, would be delighted. For 2-4 players. Ages 13+.

Customer Reviews of Dominion

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great game! We have had so much fun with this game! It is perfect for a wide variety of people as it is easy to pick up and understand, but also good for those who enjoy strategizing. I am planning on buying a couple expansion packs now!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Face paced deck building game Dominion is what is known as a "deck-building game". Each player starts with a 10 card deck. They use cards from the deck to generate money and actions to aquire more cards from a pool available to all players. These acquired cards go into your deck to be drawn on future turns. When your deck is depleted, you take your discard pile, shuffle it and start drawing again and repeat this process when needed. By using combos and generating long chains of effects you can add improvements to your deck and even thin out cards no longer needed. The player who most effectively plays cards and acquires victory points cards is the winner. Dominion was the first deck-building game and it spawned a whole list of expansions and many other games which copied it's formula with various tweaks and themes. If you're someone who likes card games like Magic the Gathering you will feel right at home with Dominion. There are lots of combos and chains of effects that can let you draw tons of cards in one turn and it can be pretty exciting to have a strong card engine going. Some people describe Dominion as "multiplayer solitaire" and that's a fair statement. There is not much player interaction in the game, you pretty much do your own thing on your turn but there are a few cards that attack players etc. This is good and bad but it ultimately depends on the group of player and what kind of game they are looking for. Dominion is top selling game and it won the "Spiel Des Jahres" German board game prize for game of the year in 2009. This award is given to a game that excel in four categories: concept (originality, playability, game value) rule structure (composition, clearness, comprehensibility) layout (box, board, rules), design (functionality, workmanship).
