Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great motor skills toy We love our gears!!! Great tool for motor skills. Really makes them problem solve and use critical thinking. It is extremely durable and sometime a little tricky for their little hands to take apart but I would rather have that then it not be sturdy and fall apart. I think it's amazing the different ways I can build to make it a spinning tower or just a flat board of spinning gears. You can also challenge them by telling them only certain colors can go horizontal or vertical so they can problem solve their way through it or just let them have fun of their own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For big and little kids I love that my older kids can enjoy playing with this - as much as the younger guys. It's educational, stimulates inventiveness and can be used to build in an open- ended way. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again I have tried this gear set with kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students. Each age group as been able to independently discover how the pieces work together, create all different types of structures with the gears, and work together to problem solve when they need to make adjustments to their creations. There were cheers and smiles all around when I showed each class the set and let them explore. The students are loving this gear set. One of the things I like best about this set is that it provides the students a chance to work together and problem solve to improve their creations. I also love that because there are so many different ways the pieces can work together, the students get the opportunity to practice the skills of creating, celebrating when their creation works, and then take apart what they made to try something new. I do wish that the product came with more building ideas for the students to help push them past basic building structures and challenge them to combine the gears together in new ways. It would be particularly helpful to have images in the directions of possible structures they could create. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from STEAM Building The packaging box was sturdy and attractive. I liked that there was a plastic handle to make the box into a briefcase for storage of the parts. The instructions were easy to read. They included both words and pictures. In my opinion, instructions are not necessary for this product but it is always helpful to have them as a back up. The instructions were more of a guide than a how to. It offered suggestions rather than "must do's". The gears are made out of a durable, smooth plastic. There are no rough or jagged edges to injure children. The gears in the 100-pack are colored in pinks, purples, and teals. I think that these colors appear more feminine and it would be better to have a variety of bold primary and secondary colors, more gender neutral. I wish that there was an option for the same set of gears in various colors. Some of my male students only wanted to use the teal gears because of this. Students did enjoy building with the gears. I did as well. Building with the product offers students the opportunity to lean how a gears work. They are able to explore their creativity in a STEAM centered learning. It is like building with legos that move. I would suggest getting this set in addition to one of the more specialized sets so that there is more variety amongst the pieces. It is great that all Gears!Gears!Gears! products work and fit together. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gears! My 4 year old was thoroughly entertained by the endless possibilities of what she could build with these gears. It also provided a nice opportunity for an adult to play/build with her!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great STEM toy for all ages When we first got this toy we figured it would be mostly for my 3 year old; however, when we opened it and first started playing with it my 7 and 10 year old also really got into it, as did I! The instructions are clear, simple to get you started on how the basic gears work. From there, the possibilities are endless for creating different combinations. I love that this toy is not only fun but educational as well. The girls were able to learn about cause and effect as well as how simple machines can work. In addition, they were able to help each other creating different patterns and combinations. It is rare to find a toy or activity that the whole family can enjoy together and an even bigger bonus to have it be educational as well. The only "downside" to the toy was it comes in different colors that were specific to each gender. Although my girls didn't seem to mind, I think just having a one set with bright colors instead of different ones to choose from would be sufficient. That alone would not deter me from recommending it to a friend. I received this product as part of an incentivized review program. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gears for girls!! The reviewer received a free sample of this product. I love that these gears are in girl colors as I want my girls (ages 7 & 9) to be just as interested in STEM activities as my boys! I have mixed feelings about the box these gears are in - I love that it is sturdy and has a convenient handle for carrying but am disappointed that it only opens from the top. This smaller opening makes my girls feel the need to dump all the pieces out to find what they are looking for as opposed to being able to work out of the box like a brief case as in other gear sets. I found the simple step by step instructions with illustrations made it easy for my girls to add gears, the crank and learn to go up and over. My girls are able to build elaborately on their own however when my 4 year old son tries to join in he needs a little bit of assistance. These gears are colorful and sturdy and allow for lots of creativity!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for letting their imagination grow We showed the kids how the gears worked and then let them go. They had so much fun building towers, bridges etc. The only con is the pieces that hold the gears are really hard to take apart once they are connected. It's good because it makes the tower or whatever sturdy but the kids couldn't take it apart without help

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinating Toy for Preschoolers We received this as a gift and I think I love it as much as my son. I wasn't sure at first what to think of it but as soon as we set some up and starting turning the crank, we were both hooked. It is mesmerizing to watch and create. We are excited to build on with other kits, too! But, clicking the base pieces together is a little bit challenging and holding the base still while turning the crank can be tough. It's hard to not touch gears while holding the base steady, so you can end up stopping the whole thing from working. I'm sure as kids are older, they can solve the problem. But my 3.5 year old has me hold it down while he cranks the handle at full speed to his total delight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun to see how pieces can work together! When we first received the gear set, I let my four y/o put the pieces together without any help, and she was content with trying to see how tall she could build a tower with the gears and support pieces. Fun and creative, but not entirely the purpose of the toy! When my older two came home, they helped her arrange the gear pieces so that they could work with each other the way the toy is intended. The kids had fun, and looked at instructions on their own to see how certain pieces fit together (six and nine year old readers, along with the four y/o). The box shows enough (pictures) that reading is probably not necessary to play. After a few minutes, the kids worked together to build more complicated gear structures, that both built upwards and turned corners. The kids (girls and a boy alike) loved the bright colors. Some may be turned off by the pink tones, but they're a nice change from the standard red, yellow, blue toys that are so common! The box is sturdy enough that the pieces can be stored in it when not in use, with a handle for ease of transportation. This would be a good toy to bring places where the kids have a little bit of room to play and might need to be entertained. I am not sure how much use the kids will get from it ultimately; while it is fun, I am not sure how many different combinations of gear-based structures they can -or want to- build. With some toys (Legos, wooden blocks, etc.) the possibilities seem nearly endless. With the gears, however, I am not convinced that is the case. For learning how pieces can work together to make them move, especially for the younger kids, this is a great toy. For older kids working with and helping younger kids learn how the gears work, this is a great toy. For stretching imagination and creating bigger and better things, this may not be. All in all, the kids enjoy it, and I'd recommend, especially for kids working together! Note: I received this product as part of an incentivized review program.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Serious Fun! This was such a fun toy! I originally thought my 4 year old would be the main user but my 8 year old son is the champ! So many fun ways to build with these. My only thing I want to mention is the box said ages 3+ but it was a bit hard for my 4 year old to do, even with help from me. My 8 year old spent hours making creations. Loved

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creative, imaginative fun! I received this product as part of a review program. I have a 3 year old granddaughter who couldn't wait to take the pieces out of the box. She was very excited that the building set included her favorite color: purple! She and her grandpa sat at the table, he reviewed the activity guide then explained to her how the set works. There are so many possible structures to build, but she chose to re-create the one she saw on the front of the box (I, unfortunately, did not get a picture of it.) She was very proud that she made what the girl on the box made. The gears seemed easy for her to hold on to and to put into place, and once assembled the finished product was very sturdy. I like that the box is sturdy enough so that all the pieces can be stored inside. The handle on the box is an added bonus, making it easier for her to carry. The only thing she had some difficulty with was disassembling the bases. They fit together quite snugly and even I had to apply a little pressure to take them apart. Maybe after she uses the set a few more times they will come apart more easily. I can only think of two cons: 1. There is only 1 handle. An extra handle would be helpful in case the original were to get lost. he 2. If you are using this set on a wooden table such as we were, the bases seem to slide around when you are turning the handle. Would it be possible to have some sort of rubber grips on the bottoms of the bases? I've added a picture of the second structure that she built. I see this toy as something that will be played with for many years. Even her grandpa had fun! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Product, Too Difficult to Assemble I practiced building with this set before introducing it to my students for the school year. The base pieces especially were difficult, some of them I couldn't even make fit unless I forced them! Taking the pieces apart was difficult, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reminds me of my childhood I received this as a gift to use in my church nursery education program. I played with a toy similar to this when I was 4 and I'm thrilled that my Sunday school kids will have this experience. My mom, who got it for me, thinks asked for it for myself, which is partly true. I love it and I know the kids will too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Grandson loves it! Grand kid loved it. Took to it right away. He loves gears. The only complaint I have is there were not enough of the six way axles to build the zig zag stairs pictured on the box. Other than that it is great!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tough to put together I gave this to my 4.5-yr-old son for Christmas. I needed to help him put the green base pieces together (and I had trouble with it - even needed to use pliers for one section because it wouldn't pop together!) He immediately filled the first layer with gears, put the crank on and enjoyed spinning all of the pieces together. He didn't want me to build up - I think he liked just the pure flat layer of gears. But after we put it away, he hasn't wanted to play with it since. I think I'll let it sit for a while and will then try to reintroduce it and see if he has renewed interest, but it currently doesn't hold his attention for long. Other kids will likely react differently. I like the idea of this toy - hoping my son starts to like it more later!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product!!! The product was much more durable than others I've seen on the market. My 3 year old grandson was able to assemble it easily except for the base. The only thing I would suggest changing is adding additional handles/cranks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My four-year-old grandson LOVED this set My four-year-old grandson LOVED this set but was sometimes frustrated that some of the parts were hard to put together and take apart. And it wasn't just him I had to ask a strong man for help in taking a few of them apart. Younger kids should have a great time playing with it if an adult or older child is on hand to help.
