Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice result, but not an easy build My 5-1/2 year-old grandson, who has built at least ten Lego kits of 350-piece complexity, most of them entirely solo, did most of the building of this Meccano 4x4 Truck kit. As he finds with Legos, the smallest parts challenge his motor skills. He sometimes obtained help in joining screws and nuts in this kit. The package was short about ten screws and one metal part. We made the metal part and bought 6-32 screws at the local hardware store to fill the shortages. A tri-flat shaft was too short for good engagement in one of the drive joints. We're in the process of getting a longer shaft that we can cut to correct length. The instructions are good, for people accustomed to Legos or to technical drawings, but very good illumination is useful to make details easy to see. This was successful, and I'm impressed at our grandson's tenacity. I would recommend this kit for older children, perhaps 9 or 10, with the caution that some parts might be missing, and fit adjustment might be necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great way to spend time with your child What a great set to get your kid unplugged and putting their fine motor skills to work. In today's fast paced, give me instant satisfaction world it is nice to see a toy that requires time, patience, and perseverance to complete. My husband and 8 year old son have been working on building 4x4 Off Road Truck for a few nights now and love it. After reading other reviews I was a little worried about how easy the instructions would be to follow but my husband found the instructions clear and easy to follow. The pieces are durable and I have no doubt they will last through multiple builds which is great since our younger ones are already asking when they can build something. This is not a quick build by any means but my son seems very satisfied with each step he completes. I do not think he could build this on his own even if he was the recommended age of 9-12 but the father/son time is invaluable. We are already looking at other Meccano sets to add to our home. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Frustrating project My 8 year old and my engineer husband were very excited to work on this project together, however, my husband was the only one that ended up building this truck. There were supposed to be additional instructions online, but we couldn't even find the model that my daughter wanted to build. She settled for one of the models that came printed with the toy. They started building together, but my husband quickly became frustrated with the instructions (or lack there of). You seriously need baby hands- about 3 of them- to put some of the pieces together. The screws are so close in length that you could easily grab the wrong one and be in trouble later. It was good that they put the one to one diagrams on the instructions, or you really would struggle trying to tell the difference between the lengths. If you pulled the directions from online, you may need to print them for this reason. We organized the little parts by placing them each in separate containers, or else you will have things rolling all over the place. My daughter lost interest after 1/2 an hour and just wanted to play with the end product. This took my engineer husband about 4 hours to build. My daughter played with it for a little bit, but it really only rolls forward slowly, so it wasn't much fun. I think maybe a very mechanical teen would like it, but I'm not really sure about that since my husband loves these type of projects but was very frustrated with this one. We won't be taking it apart to try another version unfortunately. I wish the pieces were a little easier to put together and that the instructions were written better. I do like the concept though and would love to see another version of this type of product in the future. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Little Disappointed I am a mother of 3 boys and was extremely excited to have received Meccano - 25 Models Set - 4x4 Off-Road Truck to try out with my children. My boys are 11, 10 and 9 years old and all had difficulty putting together any of the instructions. (Even I had difficulty helping them with it). It took 3 children and 3 adults to finally put together one of the trucks (and we haven't taken it apart to try another model). I think this kit should be for much older children, with better (easier) instructions and a better tool to put the pieces together. All in all, we still had fun having family time trying to build one of the models. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Meccano 25 models set 4x4 off road truck The concept is pretty cool, my son was very excited about this toy being able to change into 25 different models. Pretty cool right! Well I must say the difficulty of this toy is a 9 at least for me, some of the pieces are very small which adds to the difficult level. Overall it is very entertaining and perfect for those kids and adults that like a challenge. It took us about an hour to make a small part of the truck. Very time consuming but will be worth it at the end. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Concept but not Young Kid Friendly My kids were really looking forward to receiving the Meccano - 4x4 Off-Road Truck. The truck and kit are well designed but the instructions, and the many pieces to put together are overwhelming for the normal kid. It is a great product with all of the mechanical fasteners and quality made modeled parts. Instructions are somewhat easy to understand as long as you study the pictures but some of the similar pieces and orientations are hard to view. We kept looking back at the illustrations for every piece put together knowing that taking back apart would be a nightmare. Be prepared to take longer than one sitting to completely assemble the truck. With my kids, it took short spans over a week to finally have it fully assembled. It is pretty cool once everything is adjusted and assembled. It goes forward and backward. I don't necessarily downgrade it for the difficulty but it definitely wasn't what we were expecting. It is definitely for older aged kids as tightening and fastening requires patience and attention to detail in the orientation of the parts. I believe it could be improved by reducing the amount of actual fastener connections and have more snap fit or simpler fasteners. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Review on Meccano 4x4 Off Road Truck I think this is a pretty nice product. I received the package in the mail. As soon as my son saw the box he was so excited and ready to get started on it right away. He looked at all the models on the back of the box and picked the one he wanted to build. Good thing it turned out to be one of the ones that is in the instruction manual. So many steps but at least this one was one of the ones with the least amount of steps. His excitement faded quickly as he tried to erect the truck on his on, no go. My son is 9. This product is not for a 9 year old. The box should at least say for ages 11+. Colors of parts on instructions are a little difficult to identify parts. It was even difficult for me. It is a excellent brain builder. My son really loves the finish product though. Not sure if he's going to want to break it down to build another though. He said it was too hard. The materials are of a good quality metals and plastic. It is a great team project. With a little time and patience this can provide hours of fun for you and your son or daughter. The best part is that I was able to receive this product at no charge. Thank you BzzAgent and Spin Master. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not That great I am just really not impressed with this toy at all. My kids found it extremely difficult to put together and so did i. This is not a product i would buy. The idea of it sounds great. My boys are really into robots. It took hours to put together. my kids lost interest after about an hour and a half. Im not sure if all the parts are even there. Some of the pieces are very tiny and hard to connect with 2 hands. The inst to me were not that clear either. if you are a teeny bit off the entire robot is off . I think the instructions need to be more clear and match colors to the actual pieces. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missed the mark We were very excited to receive our Meccano-25 Models Set - 4x4 Off-Road Truck. I think the concept was wonderful, but the execution of building this truck based off the instructions missed the mark. First, the quality of the product was great! The parts are well made and are durable. However, we assembled our truck following the instructions and it was difficult, at best. The pictures in the instructions are not clear. The grey scale of the pictures make it difficult to see what is going on in the assembly pictures. This led to us making some mistakes in where we put things. These mistakes could have been avoided with clearer pictures or more specific instructions. Assembly took us far longer than it should have. A lot of that was due to the fact that we had to take things apart when we found a mistake, and rework the truck. After getting it put together we were underwhelmed by its capabilities. I guess we just expected more based on previous experiences with Meccano products. It pretty much goes forward or backwards, and ours had trouble going over pretty small objects on the ground. Overall, I am disappointed with this Meccano product. I think there is great potential for my boys to have fun building things of their own creation, but I'd suggest doing that from the start and chucking the building instructions that come with it in the garbage! Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not marketed for correct age group I was worried this would be too easy for my 13 yr old son who is on the robotics team at school because it says ages 9+. It was extremely difficult for him. All 3 of my sons have spent more than 20 hrs trying to build this and got stuck on step 51 out of 63 yes 63 steps. There are over 440 very small parts in this kit and they DO NOT line up. This would be better geared to older teenagers and probably even better as a group activity. The positives are that it encourages creativity and problem solving for those who enjoy being challenges. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't live up to expectations! My son and I were so excited to be able to review the Meccano Maker System 4x4 Off-Road Truck. We got everything set out on the table and got started on a truck. We ran into our first problem even before we put two pieces together. The instructions are awful!!! I understand they are trying to make it so you can match the color of the piece you need to the one in the book, but it has backfired on them. Some of the black pieces are just shown as a solid pieces, no holes. How am I supposed know where to attach the different pieces if I can't see where they are supposed to go? You can not estimate the distance because this thing needs to be exact or it throws the whole project off. After we struggled to read the instructions, we started trying to put a truck together. Some of these pieces are very small, you almost need 3 hands to attach them. The tools have different ways to hold the nuts, but they keep falling out of the groves to hold it in place. The bigges problem I came across, as far as being able to hold onto the pieces, is when they require 2 of the nuts and bolts to be so close together for a corner. Another problem I've come across in the instructions is that sometimes they don't show the exact pieces you need. For example; one of the straight metal pieces with holes along the whole thing had a picture of one that had 11 holes in it, but the actual one we needed only had 6 holes in it. This kit has a lot of potential, but the instructions make it near impossible to enjoy putting a truck together. It's no longer fun when you have to put the same piece on and take it off about 5 times to get it in the right spot. If they can revise their instructions to show the correct pieces and to show the holes exactly where the are on the actual piece, without being so dark, it would be a lot of fun to put together. The way they have it now just makes things so frustrating that you don't want to mess with it anymore. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's OK but kids can't keep attention for long I really love this product when I was a kid but nowadays kids just don't have the attention span that is needed to sit and put nuts and bolts together I open the package like I would have when I was a kid I was all thrilled and excited but my twelve-year-old didn't seem to have March interest and even putting stuff together so I looked at it for an hour or two and then figured that time I just passed this plan by on fortunately [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Frustrating, complex, aggravating Very complex, challenging activity. There are many very small parts in this kit. My 9 year old son who loves to assemble things, found this to be too difficult even with my help. The instructions are not detailed and are confusing. By the end of an hour, we were only 1/4 of the way done with one of the possible constructions and he had given up. I would not recommend this toy to anyone that doesn't want to intensely supervise and give a great deal of assistance with assembly. That said, even adults who are not mechanically inclined will find this frustrating beyond belief. I cannot recommend this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Customer service excellent, but disappointed in the product overall. I was disappointed. I thought this would be a really fun activity to do with my 9 year old, but he didn't really even get to play with it. I tried to set it up myself. I was confident going in as I'm no stranger to putting things like this together. The instructions were of moderate difficulty to follow. I especially liked that the pictures of the pieces needed in each step were to scale, so I could hold it up to the page and know it was the right size/length. The most difficult part of following the instructions was that many of the pieces, and thus the illustrations, were dark in color, so it was hard to see which hole was being used in each picture. Sometimes I'd figure out in a later step that I'd picked wrong, and have to fix my work. 2.5 hours in I was less than halfway through the instructions to build the 4x4. I sat down the next day to try to finish. Another 2 hours in, I discovered I was short some of the pieces. At 4.5 hours invested and no finished product, I can't recommend this toy. My 9 year old doesn't have that sort of attention span. I contacted the company and heard back within 48 hours, and they will send a replacement part. They were very easy to deal with! I am looking forward to trying to finish it, but I think we'll probably never take it apart once it's completed! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meccano 4x4 The idea of this is great, but it's very tedious and time consuming. My son and I sorted parts and tools and decided on a model to try. Not all the models instructions are included only a couple. You will have to download them online to get them all. After a few hours of working we both got frustrated and gave up. My son has tinkered a little with it but not much has been accomplished. I just don't have the patience for it I guess. Overall the concept is great we are just struggling with how long it takes and again, patience. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from meccano model set I was originally so excited to be able to review this meccano 25 model set 4x4 off road truck but my excitement quickly ended once I opened up the box. My 6 year old son and my 12 year old son both helped to get everything out of the box and sorted which took us quite awhile. We figured out which truck we wanted to build and started getting the pieces. It took us about a half an hour to put 4 screws in and we gave up! It was so hard to keep the bolts in place and screw the screw in. Not fun at all. We left if on the table and said we were going to come back later and put it together and we never did. It sat there for a week and nobody wanted to put it together so I put it back into the box and that's where it is now. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very difficult I was given the opportunity to test and review this from Spinmaster, I have always been impressed with Meccano products so I thought it would be a blast for my 8 year old son. Unfortunately I was very wrong! This thing is a tedious nightmare to put together even for my 33 year old husband who is very mechanically inclined. The recommended age is 9+ but I find it hard to believe that many 9 year olds can assemble this by themselves... as a matter of fact, I find it hard to believe that many adults can assemble this by themselves! The negatives: The pieces are very small and the instructions are never ending. The box shows that you can make up to 25 different designs but there are actually only 3 included in the box.. the rest you have to get off of their website. Very time consuming (took my husband 2 hours to get to step 13 of 36). My 8 year old typically enjoys building toys with instructions like legos and k'nex sets but he was very bored of this after 20 minutes because it was frustrating and he wasn't making any progress.I think if it was geared more towards older kids that understand it's more of a project rather than a toy there might be more success with this product. The positives: The idea that you can make all these different variations out of the pieces from one box is a really cool concept and that's why I gave it 3 stars. Supports STEM curriculum. More of a project for teenager. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun and challenging toy! My son is 9 years old and was more than eager to play with this Meccano model set. He has been doing a little at a time, as it is tedious with many very small parts. It requires fine motor work, math, and reading skills. He is patient and persistent, and each time he finishes a piece he smiles with self satisfaction. The pieces are durable and well made. It is a toy built to last. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meccano 4x4 brain chalenge I'm a BzzAgent and recently we have received an invitation to try the Meccano-25 models set, featuring a 4x4 Off road truck. My older grandson with some help from my youngest daughter accepted the chalenge and go for the 4x4 truck building. It take a wile to arrange the main parts and make the matching up with the instructions. The kit includes some small parts so they manage it so carefully to don't miss any of it. I noticed that this is a team building, not to suitable for a solo project. The pictures on the box give an idea of how the model looks like, but the instructions provide more step by step details on how to do it. The parts are made from good quality metals, and plastic with an outstanding finish. The building process will take hours of fun time, this is an excellent way to teach them how to create a simple working model of a truck, car, lifter, and other machinery. And the best part of it we #GotItFree. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Meccano - A Great toy with a difficult building technique I was in love the minute I opened my box. It was a COOL and AWESOME toy in my opinion. My boys couldn't wait to build it. Since its not my expertise, my husband took over with the boys. It took around 2 hours to build but once it was completely built, it was played with immediately. The body of the Meccano is tough and very boyish looking without a kiddy/small child feel. The wheels are made of a very tough rubber that looks to withstand rough boy hands and play. Now, the small criticism that I have. My family built the Meccano truck and forgot to put the batteries in, yes I know, I believe they were very excited to play with it and just forgot. So they had to take half of it apart to put the batteries in. I wish the battery area was a little easier to get to. All is all, the Meccano is a brand I would highly recommend to anyone with boys who want to spend time building together and then playing with the product of their hard work. Thanks Meccano and Buzzagent!!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as I expected I got this for my nine year old son, and I have to say i'm a bit disappointed in it. It is a lot harder to put together than I would think given the age range on the box (ages 9 and up). My son is fairly good at putting things together/building toys in general, but he really struggled with this and getting a lot of help. In fact he didn't put together hardly any of, mom and dad had to do the majority of it. So that is a real negative. I do totally understand why he wasn't able to do it without signifigant parent help though - the instructions are not very clear at all. They need to be more detailed with better pictures. I found it rather frustrating at times. I don't think that the typical 9-12 year old child would be able to put this together on their own at all. My 14 year old was able to rebuild and make another one but he's extremely skilled in that manner and it still took him awhile. He said the instructions weren't good, but it comes naturally to him so he wasn't as frustrated as his little brother and I were. Once together, it was a lot of fun to play with for about an hour or so. I would have liked to see it be a bit faster, but it was still fun as is. The problem is that my son wants me to build all the different vehicles, and with the time and effort it takes, it's just not worth it. I can't spend hours building for him so he can play with each one for a minutes and then want me to rebuild it for him. For me to be able to recommend this product, I would want the instructions to be much, easier to build overall, and for it to go faster. As it is, I would not recommend it. Unless you are super skilled at putting things together, I think you and your child might be frustrated with it too. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty cool, but tedious I have 3 boys who love building things so we were pretty excited about this kit. They scoured the pictures on the box and debated over which of the 25(!) models they would like to build first. Problem #1: Instructions are only included for THREE out of 25 of the models. If you want instructions for the other TWENTY-TWO models, you have to find them online. Problem #2: SO many steps! The first model has over 60 steps to follow in the assembly instructions. The other two for which directions are included, have just over 30 steps. If you have time and patience, this is a cool kit. My oldest son stuck with it. The younger two boys lost interest and just wanted me to build for them. I like the whole concept as it reminds me of the erector sets we had as kids. I just wish there were instructions included for more than 3 of the pictured models (yes, I know I can go online, but that's one more piece of equipment on the table and one more step). The instructions contained very detailed pictures which I appreciate, but 63 steps? Holy cow! I have a feeling my boys will enjoy modifying their off-road vehicles, but not sure how many more they will build following the instructions. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! My kids love this! This toy is amazing. It kept my kiddos very busy, and the flexibility of being able to build so many different things was truly great! The ease of using this is perfect for my 10 year old, and the feeling of truly building something is making him so very happy. This is great on a sick or rainy day, because your kids are truly entertained with something that is also educational. So impressed with this set. We love it! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing toy, hours of enjoyment I have purchased and used other Meccano products before and have always been satisfied. The 4x4 off-road truck set is just as great! Have an amazing time with my boys building it and then playing with it. The best part, we can take it apart and make other models. The directions are easy to read. The tools that come with it are great . It is nice that the tools are the same for all of their sets. It makes it easier when helping the boys build or if one gets misplaced. Overall this is a great toy and the brand itself is amazing! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from time consuming! This was so time consuming! We have been working on it about 4 hours and are just about half way done. :( I really hope that it works once it is complete. My daughter is doing a lot of the work. I do not suggest this for someone with anger issues, like me. You will get aggravated often. There are so many tiny pieces in the box as well. I do not think that I will be getting another one when we finish this one. Glad it was free! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Takes at least 2 people I gave this to my son who is 11 and my daughter who is 16 to play around with each model. The directions are hard to understand. They got frustrated after only 30 minutes and decided to try to make something on their own. They made a pretty cool truck. They also complained of their thumbs hurting after a while since there are so many screws/bolts to use to hold everything together. The motor broke to move the wheels as soon as they put it on the ground to try it out. I would no recommend this to a child. This has to be done by a person who has patience and only wants to model it. The picture was taken an hour after the 2 kids Sayers's to put it together and got this far because the directions were not clear. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 4 Hours later = wasted time My son who is 12 years old started working on this and after 1 hour he decided to stop. I took over and wasted another 3 hours putting it together. The instructions are ok at best, the main issue is the amount of pieces (443) and the process of putting it all together. The final result is a slow moving uncontrollable vehicle that only goes in a straight line. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lots of options, some difficulty putting it together The product has lots of different options to put it together which my son (8) loved. We ended up going with a car. Putting it together was a bit difficult. Instructions were not always clear which hole to put the screws in. I sometimes had to flip ahead a page or two and try and to see where it went. It also may be possible to do with 1 person, but I'd recommend you have two for sure. We also took a few breaks as we put it together. Seeing the motorized action after it was together was fun, but my son expected it to be faster. he played with it for a day or two, but I think he's already ready to try and make it into something else. Overall, its fun for the different options and re-use it could provide. If your really into putting these things together, this would be a great product. If your more interested in just playing with the finished product, I'm not sure the extra effort to build it would be worthwhile. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be ready to work with your child. This is not a one person job Well my son and I became frustrated with the instructions as they are impossible to understand; even the pictures are confusing. So my son decided to use his imagination and build on his own. This really helped with the disapointment of not being able to build the product we recieved.
