Customer Reviews of Puerto Rico

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Most confusing game ever title says all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My perfect boardgame I first started playing this game a few years ago and it quickly surpassed Risk, Settlers of Catan and Carcassone as my all time favourite game. Fairly unique to this game is the fact that there is no element of chance - no dice, no cards, nothing but your own wits and strategy pitted against the other players wits and strategy. A little like Chess in that respect, I guess. The basic premise of the game is that you have to build up a plantation community. You have to choose what village options you want (each has advantages and drawbacks) and you have to choose what resources you are going to produce and hopefully sell or mobilize. The winner is not necessarily the one who causes the game to end, but the one that has the biggest and most successful colony. Like a lot of the european/german boardgames, the play is a bit complicated to learn but is grasped easily after a few games. An interesting aspect is that everyone plays every turn, so there is none of that sitting around and waiting for 15 minutes while someone figures out how to lay their pieces. An average game takes about 90 minutes. While the game is technically not good for anyone under 12, if your child loves strategy video games or MMOs, Lego, or/and likes figuring out how to put things together, they may well grasp this game, love it and beat you at it, even if they're 9. My friend's child did just that to me! Note that there is a small $5 expansion pack to this game that adds additional village improvements and resources and is definitely worth finding (though Chapters doesn't sell it yet).
