Tzolkin: The Mayan Calendar presents a new game mechanism: dynamic worker placement. Players representing different Mayan tribes place their workers on giant connected gears, and as the gears rotate they take the workers to different action spots.

During a turn, players can either (a) place one or more workers on the lowest visible spot of the gears or (b) pick up one or more workers. When placing workers, they must pay corn, which is used as a currency in the game. When they pick up a worker, they perform certain actions depending on the position of the worker. Actions located "later" on the gears are more valuable, so it's wise to let the time work for you – but players cannot skip their turn; if they have all their workers on the gears, they have to pick some up.

The game ends after one full revolution of the central Tzolkin gear. There are many paths to victory. Pleasing the gods by placing crystal skulls in deep caves or building many temples are just two of those many paths...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Gamer's Game This is an excellent game for people who enjoy playing different strategy games. It's the kind of game where there are a large number of options and multiple paths to victory. A few of the options you can concentrate on are accumulating wealth, appeasing the gods, or building monuments and structures. It is definitely a time consuming game - the rules say 1.5 hours, but ours always seem to go a bit longer. The unique thing about Tzolk'in is the worker placement option. You can place a worker on a gear and leave her there for several turns, or pull her off after only one turn, but the longer you can leave her on the gear, the more valuable the activity she can perform. My group of friends quite likes the game, but it's a Sunday afternoon type game, and I wouldn't play it with people who don't have experience playing other more complex games - Pandemic, Five Tribes, etc. All in all, I'm really glad I bought it and I'm already looking for the expansions!
