about

The all-new, expanded follow-up to southwestern British Columbia's best-selling hiking guidebook-now featuring trails on the islands and northern Washington.

For nearly 50 years, David and Mary Macaree's iconic 103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia has been the province's most popular and most trusted hiking guide, with more than 100,000 copies sold to date. Author Stephen Hui carries on the Macarees' legacy in 105 Hikes In and Around Southwestern British Columbia-an all-new, expanded follow-up inspired by their beloved classic.

With an additional selection of trails on the islands and in Washington's North Cascades, options for hiking with children, and rainy day recommendations, 105 Hikes covers a wider area and wider range of abilities than its predecessor. Like the Macarees, Hui provides detailed information about how to get to each trailhead (including transit options, where available), distance and elevation gains, estimated hiking times, and points of natural or historical interest. But he also includes all-new features such as an at-a-glance summary of all the hikes in the book; tips for hiking safely and ethically; clear, topographical color maps; a rating system for hike quality and difficulty; Indigenous place names where appropriate; and shorter or longer options for every outing. The resulting guidebook is both more extensive and user-friendly than ever before-a comprehensive, authoritative guide for trekking in all seasons.

Stephen Hui has been hiking, backpacking, and scrambling in British Columbia's Coast Mountains for twenty-five years. His outdoor writing and photography have appeared in the Georgia Straight, the Toronto Sun, Vancouver Is Awesome, and Wild Coast magazine. Born and based in Vancouver, BC, Hui works for an environmental organization and...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My dream hiking companion for this region! Do you turn to Google for details about local hikes? I do this way too often and it is ridiculously unreliable. Not to mention what happens when you lose service on the way to the trail head... I'm grateful that Stephen created this book! 105 Hikes is beautiful and informative but better yet it's kind of like having a guide right there with you when you're planning a trip - with all the key information easy to access in one place. I trust Stephen to include all relevant details and I Iove being able to plan trips on the fly without consulting the internet. I appreciate that indigenous place names are included for some areas and that there tips for being safe and ethical on the trail. Buy this as a gift for any hiking enthusiasts or you know! Or anyone visiting this region! Oh ya - and don't forget to follow Stephen on social media. He shares a ton of beautiful hiking photos, writes thoughtful articles about the environment and gives great hiking tips as he goes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great new hiking guide!! This new hiking guide by Stephen Hui contains 105 hikes, each with directions for hiking and driving, a great topographic map, a photograph, and statistics and ratings which tell you how far you will be going, the difficulty level, how long it takes, how much elevation you will gain, and more. There is also a table that gives the statistics for all hikes at a glance, which I think will be very useful. The book includes sections on how to be prepared for your hike and how to hike ethically in the backcountry. I especially love the photos as it gives you an idea of what you can expect to see along the way. Even if you’re like my friend and feel as if you’ve done every worthwhile hike in the area, you’re likely to find some new hikes in this book that you’ll want to try! I’m looking forward to getting out and putting this book to good use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must-Have for Hiking in BC! I'm adding this book as #11 to the 10 essentials one needs to safely venture out into BC's terrain! Stephen Hui’s "105 Hikes" is a comprehensive and beautifully produced work that details BC’s Southwest trails. I had the privilege of joining Stephen on a few of these excursions (Currie, Erskine, Maxwell, Garibaldi to name a few) and observed the effort and energy he invested in accurately documenting the experience. One of the unique aspects about this book is that it provides an insight into BC’s cultural and environmental landscape. I highly recommend "105 Hikes" for those that are interested in exploring this wonderful and magical province.
