#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER

First he rewrote the record book. Now, to mark the NHL's ninety-ninth anniversary, Wayne Gretzky has written the story of our game.

In 99: Stories of the Game, Gretzky looks back on the last ninety-nine years and tells us, from his point of view, about the NHL’s most memorable moments. We already know what he means to the game. Now he shows us what the game means to him.

From hockey's fierce early battles on natural ice; through its mythical golden era, where Howe, Richard, Béliveau, Hull, Orr, and Esposito defined greatness; through the unforgettable dynasties in Montreal, New York, and Edmonton and the success stories of today’s NHL, Gretzky takes us onto the ice and into the dressing room to share never-before-published stories about the great players and great characters who have inspired him.

With the insight of someone who knows the incomparable thrill of lifting the Stanley Cup, as well as the agony of falling short against a bitter rival, Gretzky weaves in his own memories with the saga of the game that has meant so much to him.

Warm, direct, and personal, these are accounts of friendship and rivalry, triumphs and upsets, role players and heroes. All of them great stories of the game.
WAYNE GRETZKY, nicknamed “The Great One,” is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player ever. He is the leading scorer in NHL history, and is the only NHL player to total more than two hundred points in one season—a feat he accomplished four times. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held sixty-one separate NHL records, ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from yes! Great book, with fun insights into the history of the WHA and NHL merger. Kind of a dovetail historical continuation from Ken Dryden's THE GAME. The author has a very pleasant style.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book. A Must for Every Hockey Fans Collection What more can you say, a book about hockey written by the best player ever to play the game. This book is a must for all the Hockey Fans out there or even those who are just Gretzky fans. The way that the stories are told combining the old with Wayne's own experience provides the best combination possible. Loved it and will read it again when Hockey Season comes around.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Please stay on the ice it seems that publishers are trying to jump in the gravey train this book season as there are at least four hockey memoirs being published. All of them including 99 are uninteresting. I lost intent in "99" about half way through and did not finish the book. There is a small market for this book for readers who remember the author or who want a signed copy because they may think it's an investment like his hockey card. You won't be so lucky. The book will sell well for Christmas because it's a last minute stocking stuffer kind of book, but then it should remain there. The will be great quantities of this book on the remainder shelves for 4.99 next year. If you are a Gretzky fan purchase it then.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Greatest Hockey Player Ever! Wayne was the greatest hockey player ever - and seems like a truly decent human - but as an exciting personality? Not as much. His ghost writer must have had to work double time to try and make some of these stories interesting.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Auto-penned forgeries where sold as autographed copies. Very disappointing. Let me start by saying how excited I was to be able to order an autographed Wayne Gretzky book.....my childhood idol and the greatest hockey player ever. I ordered 5 copies to give as Christmas gifts to my dad and my brothers. Well, they arrived today, and much to my disappointment, it is very clear that the signature is an auto-pen facsimile. I thought I was purchasing an actual autographed copy, as was advertised, and now I have 5 books all with the exact same "signature" in the exact same spot on the page. This page has now been changed to "auto-penned" edition. How ridiculous it will be to give these books as gifts with a sticker that says "signed by Wayne". If sure that Wayne never even had contact with these books. Any other time that I have purchased signed books from Chapters/Indigo, it was clear that the book was actually signed, and they were awesome. I was under the impression that because I wasn't able to make the book signings, that the books I was purchasing were signed by Wayne at these events and left for those who had pre-ordered.
