about

New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni’s thrilling series continues as Seattle homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite is plunged into a case of family secrets and murder…

“Another outstanding novel from one of the best crime writers in the business.” —Associated Press

Called in to consult after a young woman disappears, Tracy Crosswhite has the uneasy feeling that this is no ordinary missing-persons case. When the body turns up in an abandoned well, Tracy’s suspicions are confirmed. Estranged from her family, the victim had balked at an arranged marriage and had planned to attend graduate school. But someone cut her dreams short.

Solving the mystery behind the murder isn’t Tracy’s only challenge. The detective is keeping a secret of her own: she’s pregnant. And now her biggest fear seems to be coming true when a new detective arrives to replace her. Meanwhile, Tracy’s colleague Vic Fazzio is about to take a fall after his investigation into the murder of a local community activist turns violent and leaves an invaluable witness dead.

Two careers are on the line. And when more deadly secrets emerge, jobs might not be the only things at risk.

Robert Dugoni is the critically acclaimed New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, and #1 Amazon bestselling author of the Tracy Crosswhite Series, including My Sister’s Grave, Her Final Breath, In the Clearing, The Trapped Girl, and Close to Home. The Crosswhite Series has sold more than 2,500,000 books worldwide, and My Sister’s Grave...

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great continuation of the series This is the sixth mystery in the Tracy Crosswhite series. I have reviewed Dugoni's first, second and fifth book although I've read them all and enjoyed them thoroughly. The synopsis on the back of the book gives a little peek into where this book is going. If you haven't read the last Tracy Crosswhite, spoiler alert NOW. Tracy is pregnant. Yep. And she hasn't told the squad. She's afraid of her placement within her friends will change if she tells her boss she's expecting. It doesn't help that there's a new female detective working with them all. And she keeps using Tracy's computer, desk and phone. Sometimes it's the little things that get annoying. But Tracy has larger concerns. She's working a big case involving arranged marriage. An estrangement from the victim's family points to foul play close to home. Tracy's colleague Vic is also in trouble when a case he's investigating goes pear shaped and a key witness is dead. Both their careers are on the line and it's just going to get more complicated. I always like Dugoni's books. One reviewer pointed out that his books always feel so real. Like this actually happened just the way he wrote it. I totally agree, it's the real details, the small pieces of evidence and nitty gritty bits that make these police procedurals feel authentic. Dugoni always hits just the right note. And he's always relevant to the times we're in now. "A Steep Price" is a totally engrossing novel. It's the characters that keep bringing me back. I want to know how Tracy's life is going and to learn how her other detective friends are faring. The cases, although excellently researched, are secondary. Dugoni writes a beautiful character, you want to know them and feel their hurts and bruises in life. If you have missed this series so far, I highly recommend you finding the first Tracy Crosswhite and start reading. You're missing something awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid, intense, and captivating! In this latest novel by Dugoni, A Steep Price, we head back to Seattle where Tracy Crosswhite and her coworkers on the Seattle PD find themselves immersed in both the investigation of a murdered mother with some dangerous enemies and the disappearance of an Indian American, pre-med student whose moonlighting may or may not have gotten her killed. The prose is descriptive and gritty. The characterization is spot on with all the usual gang back including the tough, determined Tracy Crosswhite whose greatest struggles involve her memories, secrets, and new pregnancy. And the engrossing plot is a tightly-paced, ominous tale full of twists, turns, surprises, violence, and murder. Overall, A Steep Price is a highly entertaining, gripping, timely thriller that highlights Dugoni’s exceptionally ability to write police procedurals that have well-drawn characters and authentic storylines. It is the sixth novel in the Tracy Crosswhite series, and if you’re not already reading this series, you really should be!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional police procedural Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an e-ARC of A Steep Price by Robert Dugoni in exchange for an honest review. This novel is the sixth in the series featuring homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite. However, it can easily be read as a standalone. What makes this murder mystery interesting are the dual storylines: Tracy investigates a missing person case while another detective in her department, Vic Fazzio, investigates the murder of a community activist. The author moves seamlessly between the two cases, maintaining the attention of the reader throughout. This was my first Robert Dugoni but it will not be the last. The author proves to be exceptional when it comes to police procedurals. Highly recommended.
